Clearly, there are certain brain-states (relaxation) that trigger steady breathing that create the magic sound we all love, but this study suggests that purring is an unintended side-effect, not a blessing or endorsement from our feline masters. Meaning: they can't help being this cute.

Previously it was believed that there was a specialized part of the brain that oscillated vocal cords to produce the sound. Now we know that it just takes steady deep breathing, which makes sense given how important it is to newborn kittens who have little to no control over vocalization.

In fact, the weirdest part: sustained purring doesn't require *brain involvement at all*. There are fibrous pads in the throat (plica vocalis) that are set in motion by an impulse, then SELF-SUSTAIN the purring until the breathing pattern stops. It's "flow-induced self-sustained oscillation" 🧪😸

Kittens purr as a way of helping momma cats track them, without cries that would give them away to possible predators. We associate purring with contentment, a social signal to the house-staff who care for them that *The Monarch* is pleased. But purring is not under conscious control.

This is because throat structures needed for roaring (thick vocal folds) prevent purring, at least at audible levels. Purring in genus Felis occurs between 20–30 Hz & until 2023, we didn't really understand the structure making the sound & how it was controlled. It starts with kittens.
