The objective of education is to make desirable changes in the way of living; the Quaker objective is a new way of life arrived at through spiritual experiences. The child’s creative urge is the precious stuff to release and to rely on: The best schoolmasters seem to be saying, as clearly as Quakers when they invoke the inner light, ‘The kingdom of God is within you.’

Did you know a Quaker teetotaler helped turn root beer into an American icon? 🥤 Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Hires (1851–1937) first tasted a root-based drink on his honeymoon in 1875. He loved the flavor, but the original concoction was also a powerful laxative.

To educate children religiously requires a quietude of mind and sympathy in their guardians, with the state of the good seed in them, which will lead rightly to discriminate between good and evil; to discover the corrupt source of many seeming good actions; and to perceive that a real innocency is the root of others….

Here we see the necessity of true wisdom being renewed, and the insufficiency of that which is carnal, and boasts its own experience and strength. It is the humbled mind to which is unfolded such mysteries of true godliness.

Friends’ peace testimony challenges us all to be peace educators. We may not all be teachers, but we are all communicators, and we all need to be learners. Peace education should be seen as an integral part of our peace testimony. But it is essentially something one does, and not something one talks about…. Learning, to be educated, means changing one’s behavior, and peace education therefore aims at changing our own individual behavior. We communicate our values by the manner of our lives….

I can truly ascribe all my knowledge in divine things to the inward manifestation of grace and truth, the teaching of the Holy Spirit. It was Christ, the Light of the world, the Life of men, who opened to me the Scriptures, and gave me a discerning of their meaning; and, as I was faithful and obedient to the pointings of Truth, I was favored with further and clearer discoveries thereof.

Nothing, I believe, can really teach us the nature and meaning of inspiration but personal experience of it. That we may all have such experience if we will but attend to the divine influences in our own hearts, is the cardinal doctrine of Quakerism.

The Lord God of heaven and earth is come to teach his people himself by his light, Spirit, grace, and truth, and to bring them off all the world’s teachers. God hath raised up Christ Jesus, his Prophet, whom people should hear; and saith, ‘This is my beloved Son, hear ye Him,’ and Christ saith, ‘Learn of me, I am the way, the truth, and the life; and no man comes to the Father, but by me.’

If we want to champion truth, the first step on the road is knowing why we want to do it. We need to commit to it as a way of life. It may start with a particular issue, an injustice, or a cause, or it might be a desire to be closer to God by living in and with the truth and its challenges.

There will be times when it involves holding out against the tide, standing up for what is right regardless of the cost. That’s why it’s important the search for truth includes a quest for clarity about what we believe—what it is we stand for. That’s a process, an evolving spiritual experience, but it’s one we need to be honest and clear about if we’re going to pursue truth in the world.

Those who are brought to a pure still waiting upon God in the spirit, are come nearer to the Lord than words are; for God is a spirit, and in the spirit is he worshiped…. In such a meeting there will be an unwillingness to part asunder, being ready to say in yourselves, it is good to be here; and this is the end of all words and writings—to bring people to the eternal living Word.

Believing that God can show us the way, we should maintain a strong faith, one which can affect the consciousness of others. To be able to affect the consciousness of others, we must of necessity be prepared to sacrifice ourselves, making our bodies a part of the effort.

The peacemaker's catch phrase is "self-sacrifice." If it were not for self-sacrifice there would be no peace movement. It doesn't mean that everyone should sacrifice his or her life. If we pray and our efforts are still insufficient, God will help. What is important is not what we do but what God does through us.

Life is meant to be lived from a Center, a divine Center…Life from the Center is a life of unhurried peace and power. It is simple. It is serene. It is amazing. It is triumphant. It is radiant. It takes no time, but it occupies all our time. And it makes our life programs new and overcoming. We need not get frantic. He is at the helm. And when our little day is done we lie down quietly in peace, for all is well.

Nayler: Not really. Probably just going to ride into Bristol on a horse, reenacting Christ's Palm Sunday entry into Jerusalem. Was gonna tell my followers to sing "hosanna" and lay garments on the ground in front of me lol

Fox: Absolutely do not do that

Nayler: Oh, alright. I won't. Glad this technology exists so I can avoid making a choice I might really regret

Value just being. [Just being] is active, not passive. Being still is not ‘failing’ to move forward; things are happening in the seeming stillness… valuable things like rest, recovery, happiness; feeding body, heart, mind, or spirit; a period of calm before a time of use of energy; growth; learning; tasting and steeping in the truths and realities.

Our need is to accept ourselves as a whole, and offer that whole to God, leaving it to God ‘unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid’ to evaluate the good and bad in us. The glorious miracle is that, if we can do this, God can still use us, with all our faults and weaknesses, if we are willing to be used.

The knowledge that I am usable, and sometimes used, is to me a source of love and gratitude and strength far deeper even than joy and happiness.

Most persons are awakened and set on their new track of life through the quickening and kindling power of some person who becomes for them the instrument of inspiration and of the creation of faith and the vision of a nobler way of life. Persons are set on fire by someone who is already aflame. It is a trumpet call to high adventure that starts the forward movements away from old forms.

That is one of the greatest stories in the long history of religion. It was through a long and wonderful circuit of souls, in a succession of forerunners, that the kindling idea of “Something of God in the soul of man” came to George Fox.
