Feedback from profs: this is excellent, hope it gets funded! Feedback from research office: here is one change per line you should make to really fit in with the call. ECAs, make sure you share grant applications with uni admin as well! Their insight is priceless and their work is so valuable!

There's actually research on this and it involves scrutiny. If you're Black people are going to look at your work looking for mistakes in a way they would never for white people.

If the press was willing to take their cues from Nathan Cofnas, a culture warrior who self-describes as a 'race realist', it's hardly surprising they paid no heed to Jason Arday's humanity and the potential impact of their hounding. Meanwhile so many senior white scholars have gotten away with worse

I have decided to dedicate whatever time I have left in academia to support ECAs, racialised scholars, and those of us from the "Global South". In the rest of this thread, I will share organisations who can support those academics. Feel free to tag more!

We still don't know if Jason Arday failed his intellectual duties. But we do know that multiple institutions have failed him in ways it would be unthinkable for other professors accused of plagiarism or worse. Why?
100
Dr Julia Ribeiro Thomaz @juliarsct.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
And the media, both social and traditional, doesn't care about the wonderful science being produced or about the cuts and closures, but one in thousands of plagiarism cases became breaking news?!?! The media was weaponised, another institutional failure.
100
Dr Julia Ribeiro Thomaz @juliarsct.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
After he resigned, the institution who, in their own words, was still running an investigation should have offered him psychological support. That was another failure of duty of care.
120
Dr Julia Ribeiro Thomaz @juliarsct.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
The instances he was being accused of were not noticed by the responsible institutions and then flagged up by a bitter racist who got the sack. That was an institutional failure of duty of care towards both Jason Arday & towards his students-to-be: if there was plagiarism, it should've been flagged

Dr Julia Ribeiro Thomaz @juliarsct.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
Why was a leading black scholar so scrutinised if we all know someone who plagiarised something & just went on with their lives? Three truths can coexist: plagiarism is intellectual dishonesty, big symbols become big targets, and black scholars/from the 'Global South' are subjected to more scrutiny.

This is not a crisis of universities but an utter failure of government. If Labour was serious about turning UKHE around they could (by removing the overseas student levy, to start). UKHE is in absolute freefall and is in completely danger of becoming unrecoverable.
