Whenever I visit Ranworth, St Helen, I always take a peek at the C15th Antiphoner, described on the church website as, 'a high quality medieval service book. It is most likely to have been written by professional scribes in Norwich around the year 1460.' #medieval #heritage #manuscript #history

Hope? Winter passes gradually into spring. There's a lot to trouble the mind just now but we need quiet moments & perhaps a generous helping of hope.
My first sighting of snowdrops here in Ireland. I associate them with hope.

Many churches around the country are offering warm spaces this winter - places to find community, support and warmth at what can be a difficult time of year. Find one on AChurchNearYou.com by searching for churches in your area and filtering by the 'warm space' tag.

John of the Cross called it the "dark night of the soul"—not God's absence but God's presence felt as absence. Julian of Norwich wrote "all shall be well" from isolation during plague. They knew: winter is formative, not failure. Rest Stop: open.substack.com/pub/apilgrim...

This fair lovely word ‘mother’ is so sweet and so kind in itself that it cannot truly be said of anyone except of him who is the true mother of life and of all things. The kind, loving mother who knows and recognizes the needs of her child protects it very tenderly. Julian of Norwich, b. 1342

St Julian's Church full to the brim with people listening to Hetta Howes deliver the Julian Lecture 2025.Screenshot of message from the parish on facebook saying:

We were thrilled to welcome 110 people to St Julian's, Norwich this afternoon for the annual Julian Lecture: every spare seat was taken, Fr Bruce sat on an upturned flower bucket, and people were sitting in the cell and standing in the porch! Despite some of the discomfort, we hope everyone was able to benefit from the lecture. Dr Hetta Howes of City St George’s, University of London gave a splendid presentation exploring the lives of medieval women and society's expectations of them, and looking particularly at how Julian of Norwich, in her seclusion in the anchorhold in this place, was able to exercise a radical freedom while also seeking her ultimate fulfilment in knowing and loving God, without whom she knew she would always be in want.
