Super cool paper by my student @pkuchmiichuk.com that synthesizes Dylan Bumford and @simoncharlow.com's work on effect-driven interpretation with probabilistic dynamic semantics to understand how slack regulators like "exactly" and "approximately" work.

New preprint: In Ukrainian, several approximating devices can stack on a single numeral, and the result conveys the same interval as one device alone. I argue that a numeral introduces the resolutions it can be read at, and that approximators operate on that set the way indefinites and definites do.

Restricting resolutions: effect-driven semantics of numerical approximation
Approximators such as *approximately* or *exactly* have been analyzed either as operators that manipulate a numeral's denotation, or as devices that select a granularity level at which the numeral is

Sometimes to make an omelette you have to break a few eggs. Where “make an omelette” means assemble a new piece of furniture. And “break a few eggs” means not assemble it correctly.

Anyone talked about those uses of comparatives without explicit standards like, 'he's a taller guy'. I think these are only good attributively (#he's taller)? I have this vague intuition that the standard degree is being existentially quantified.

It will be seven years, on June 24th, that my 20-year-old daughter Robyn lost their life doing bicycle messenger work in New York City, when a for-hire driver blocked the bicycle lane and the speeding distracted driver of a box truck knocked them to the ground and then crushed them into the road.
