In terms of imagery, Insula is important for shifting attention internally (salience network); sense of agency; and affective grounding of imagery. In our view, disrupting this system produces characteristic imagery disturbances 2/2 www.cell.com/trends-open/...

Why is mental imagery so closely linked to emotions, as well as affective conditions (e.g. depression) and neurodevelopmental variation (e.g. autism, alexithymia)? In our new Trends Open paper, We propose its due to their overlap in mechanisms driven by insula. 1/2

Thus aphantasia is associated with a disruption in the brain's capacity to sustain internally generated predictive cycles. The same cycles voluntary imagery depends on. Full paper here: osf.io/preprints/ps... 5/5

In 578 participants spanning the full aphantasia-to-hyperphantasia spectrum, these two components were negatively coupled in those with typical iamgery; stronger prediction forward meant weaker reconstruction backward, and vice versa. A signature of the loop working as an integrated system. 3/5

We used intentional binding — when you voluntarily cause something, your brain compresses time between action and outcome. It splits into two components: one where the brain generates a prediction forward, one where it evaluates backward. Together they form a closed predictive loop 2/5

yes, because ToM deficit is also a result of suboptimal interoception. In other words, interoception is foundation of both ToM (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... ) and imagery. So in short, in interoception is the foundation of both so thus a more fundamental explanation.

The main issue in aphantasia research is that is too focused on the senses; like blaming muscles for paralysis after a stroke. The real problem may lie deeper, i. interoception and the autonomic nervous system (e.g. congenital aphantasics show lower POTS symptoms, suggestive of lower level issues).

...but what do you make of aphantasia being linked to various of those scales... e.g. self-reported autonomic reactivity (BPQ); chilhdood trauma (CTQ), autism/adhd (also VVIQ is linked to cardioceptive sensitivity)...the overall pattern suggests some kind of interoceptive agnosia
