It honestly feels like I'm being baked alive in this #summer #heatwave. But so many governments keep acting as if this were an exception, not our #newnormal. You can read more about it in this article at @theconversation.com theconversation.com/summers-new-...

Summer’s new normal is a hazard that’s testing Europe’s climate resilience
As people across Europe are having to acclimatise to an unprecedented heatwave, coordinated responses for tackling extreme heat need to come from the top, and there’s no time to lose.

Reaching net zero by 2050 is often framed as a cost burden. The UK Climate Change Committee’s latest analysis suggests the opposite. The real risk is fossil fuel dependency.

The U.S. is mirroring a pattern that has happened in authoritarian regimes around the world. When a government erects barriers to reproductive care, it doesn’t just cause death and suffering for women and their families. Such policies are often a first step in the gradual decline of democracies.

Climate change is here and pretending it is not can lead to horrifying consequences. We must invest in risk disaster assessment, response and recovery. Otherwise, when those disasters happen, we are left vulnerable in ways that could have been prevented.

This image is a meme using humor to highlight a frustration in academic research. The top part, labeled "A GAP IN THE LITERATURE," represents the perception of a research gap—a topic that appears to be unexplored or insufficiently studied in academic work. The bottom part, labeled "NON-ENGLISH PAPER THAT NO ONE READS," humorously suggests that such a "gap" often exists not because the topic is unstudied but because the relevant research is published in languages other than English and overlooked by English-speaking researchers.

This reflects a common issue in academia where language barriers result in valuable non-English studies being underutilized or ignored, perpetuating the appearance of gaps in the literature.

While digging for data on the floods in Brazil, I keep coming across years-old warnings about the dangers of flawed anti-flood systems. Different agencies, same message: a disaster was inevitable if the systems weren’t updated. They weren’t—and the disaster came.

This image uses satire to highlight the inequities and systemic challenges faced by scientists from the Global South in comparison to those from the Global North in academia and research collaborations.

First Panel: Global North Scientists traveling to the Global South for fieldwork

The scientists are depicted on a private jet, making a dismissive or colonial reference to "opportunities in ex-colonies."
This caricature highlights how researchers from wealthier countries often access resources, conduct fieldwork, and publish on topics in Global South regions with relative ease, sometimes without adequate collaboration with local researchers or acknowledgment of local expertise.
Second Panel: Global South Scientists traveling to the Global North for conferences

Scientists from the Global South are shown facing a dismissive, bureaucratic, and discriminatory visa process, where consulates demand extensive proof of legitimacy (e.g., proving they are "not terrorists").
The barriers mentioned, such as long wait times and high fees (half their research grant), point to how systemic obstacles, financial disparities, and stereotypes severely hinder Global South scientists' ability to attend conferences, collaborate internationally, or share their research on equal footing.
