ngl I'm starting to get pretty annoyed by press conferences and headlines touting a bill that has so many loopholes as to be completely meaningless when it comes to reining in corporate landlords

This line from the NYT piece about college radio is deeply ironic to me in particular, as one of my recurring nightmares involves being mortified at forgetting how the radio equipment works and leaving extensive amounts of dead air time www.nytimes.com/2025/11/20/s...
Screenshot of New York Times article that reads "For the people who make it run, the random and sprawling appeal of having to fill hours of airtime is the draw. In an era of polish, perfection, and increasing corporate consolidation, these student stations can feature seconds or even minutes of “dead air.” But when it’s working, between each set of unusual and handpicked songs, an actual human being with knowledge and heart will explain why they care — and why you should too. The results can be deep, surprising, incredibly human, and wildly satisfying."

Yo @atlantaciviccircle.org, this is pretty gross, especially on a story about such an important topic. Can we just not?

New research out from friends at @pestakeholder.bsky.social shows that private equity firms own 10% of all apartment units across the United States, and upwards of 20% of all apartments here in Georgia, the highest share of any state pestakeholder.org/reports/priv...

Not sure if I've got any friends in Pittsburgh who don't already know about this, but I'll be giving a talk at Pitt this Friday, 4/11 at 10:30am on my research into the geographies of absentee housing ownership in Atlanta. Come thru if you can!

This tidbit about the connections between different segments of the housing market through their shared private equity owners is a pretty apt example of the kind of stuff we're actually up against, and what having an appropriate lens helps one to see and understand
Screenshot of article text reading: "These hotels prey on people’s desperation, and they’re enormously profitable. The same Wall Street investors and private equity firms buying up vast swaths of America’s rental housing stock are also buying up these hotels. In 2021, Blackstone and Starwood Capital Group purchased Extended Stay America for several billion dollars. The same private equity firms pushing people out of their rental housing are also cornering the market on the very places the evicted are forced to go when they lose their stable housing—and profiting off of that."

Couldn't have said it better than @brian-goldstone.bsky.social in this new interview... www.thenation.com/article/cult... Some of my dearest friends & family live in California, but if your analysis of housing starts and stops there, I'm really not interested in anything you have to say
Screenshot of article text reading "Having said that, for all that makes the city unique, I would argue that Atlanta is more representative of what cities across the country are experiencing than the places where housing and homelessness stories tend to be covered—cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. Those places aren’t necessarily aberrations but more extreme versions of what cities like Atlanta are on their way to becoming. The lack of tenant protections in Georgia is actually the norm in much of the country. Widespread displacement and the wholesale remaking of former working-class neighborhoods is occurring everywhere, not just in Atlanta but in cities like Austin and Charlotte, Nashville and Seattle. It’s happening throughout the US."

So the dipshit libertarian economists are still out here calculating rates of institutional ownership based on inconsistent denominators and claiming it's definitive proof that corporate landlords aren't a problem 🙄 www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
"First, the trend of large financial firms buying homes is overstated. The number of US homes owned by private equity firms is about 500,000 — or less than 1% of the 145 million-plus housing units in the US. Looking at institutional investors more broadly, the five largest own about 2% of the housing stock, a noticeable but still not huge proportion. As for the flow of homes entering the market, investors are buying about 16%."

One of a couple ironic things about this signage on GSU's campus is that the only thing preventing people from enjoying the campus greenway has been the as-yet-unfinished construction on a full half of it (pictured in background) that has been ongoing since the Fall semester 🙄

Apologies for the humblebrag, but... It's pretty cool to have this particular paper hit this milestone, given that it was based on a dissertation project that fell apart and was published in a special issue that initially rejected my abstract submission.

I'm always trying to keep track of the new innovations in academic spam emails, but this one is a first: a pay-for-play mutual citation ring.
As fellow researchers, we are trying to improve the visibility of our research studies by mutually citing one another’s articles. And we want to offer you the same opportunity. Right now, we have a number of articles ready to be published, and we find some of your articles related enough for us to cite them.

Alternatively, we can offer you a sum of $100 to $300 US dollars for 2 to 6 citations of our articles if you have works close to publication in acceptable academic journals. Please let us know if you are interested in cooperating with us. We appreciate that you dedicated your precious time to reading our email and we are looking forward to receiving a response from you.
