It's Nobel season. Someone somewhere must have done a ranking and analysis of how successful each of the prizes has been over time at honoring the deserving, not honoring the undeserving, and not failing to honor the deserving. Presumably either Chemistry or Physics would come out on top.

An excellent combination of old standbys and newer works. I went to check just how old Power and Imagination is (46 years!) and learned that Lauro Martines died this past June at 99 years old, around the same time Carlo Ginzburg did. RIP.

There also used to be a skill to giving usefui accurate directions to someone who didn't have a map. "Go about half a mile from the exit then make a left at the light. There will be a Sunoco station on the corner. The entrance is the third driveway on the right..."

I think I missed this fun thread on paleography when it first appeared. I remember when I first started in the archives being happy when a document in Latin turned up because I could at least make out the words. It does take a while to get the rhythm of old handwriting.
