6/ This work reinforces the value of One Health surveillance looking beyond vertebrate hosts alone and includes the arthropods associated with them. Very grateful to all co-authors and collaborators across virology, entomology, field ecology, metagenomics, and virus discovery.

5/ Using metagenomic sequencing, phylogenetics, virus isolation, and cell-culture experiments, we found that SCCV can replicate in mammalian cell lines. SCCV was detected in 18.4% of examined bat bugs, highlighting how much remains unknown at the bat–ectoparasite–virus interface.

4/ This connection is interesting because it links Cambodian bat-associated ectoparasites to a broader group of bat-associated coltivirus-like viruses detected across very different geographic regions.

3/ SCCV is most closely related to Tai Forest reovirus, a coltivirus-related virus originally isolated from the blood of free-tailed bats captured in Côte d’Ivoire in 2006.

2/ We identified a novel coltivirus, provisionally named Stricticimex coltivirus (SCCV), in a newly described bat bug species associated with cave-dwelling wrinkle-lipped free-tailed bats (Mops plicatus) in Cambodia.

SCCV is closely related to Tai Forest Reovirus (TFRV), previously found in African bats found in 18.4% of bat bugs collected from cave-dwelling bats. SCCV was successfully isolated in several mammalian cell lines, showing potential to infect vertebrate hosts.
