First day of 10th grade, finally here! Kid was ready with hair done (herself!) the night before. Savoring these last few years and grateful my kid is excited for school. Still a couple more weeks of summer for the 14th-grader…

New home repair badge: restringing 40-year-old (probably) wood slat blinds! Two down, 16 (x2 strings) to go probably over the next X years. I know it’s silly but it’s just nice to sit down (and stand up, and sit down, and stand up) and learn how to fix a small thing and now I know how to do it. :)

@bakerdphd.bsky.social, @jscottclayton.bsky.social, and I are all quoted in this Washington Post piece on a small, but growing, number of super-elite private colleges pushing their cost of attendance past $100,000 this fall. Tufts, Vanderbilt, and Brown all missed by less than $10...strategic?

Fifteen schools now charge six figures per year for the total cost of attendance; others are on the verge.

🚨New working paper alert!🚨 Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have grown rapidly. Who uses them? Do they improve kids' skills? BU econ PhD student Samuel Nitkin and I provide answers in: "Kumon Up: Private Tutoring Centers and Student Achievement" www.nber.org/papers/w35671 1/?
Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have expanded rapidly in recent decades.
Combining data on business locations, household spending, and district test scores, we study who
uses these centers and how they affect academic skills. Nearly half of tutoring users are from the top
income decile, with Asian and White households five and two times as likely to purchase tutoring as
Black and Hispanic households. A staggered differences-in-differences design shows the opening
of a district's first chain center raises district-wide math and reading scores by 0.02-0.03 standard
deviations, at a much lower cost than public spending typically producing similar gains. Math
effects are largest for White and Asian students, so that center entry widens racial achievement
gaps, though less so in more racially integrated districts. These private investments help their
users, deepen educational inequality, and shape outcomes by which state accountability systems
and families judge schools.

I’ve had two papers rejected in the past week, feeling a bit down about it. Come into work this AM & stop to re-read an article my kid wrote for their HS paper a couple years ago which I taped to my door, on our attachment to numbers (grades, scores… ie pubs, cites). So wise (excerpt in alt text).
…You could be comparing yourself to someone who is sacrificing their mental and physical health to maintain their "numbers." At the end of the day, it's not possible to know exactly how everyone else is doing-the only person who you truly spend every second with is yourself. That can make it really easy to feel like a failure, because how could a realistic picture of yourself compare to an incomplete and possibly romanticized picture of somebody else?

…Here's something I wish I had known earlier, and something that I am still trying to believe: While test grades and exam scores feel relevant now, getting an 80 versus a 90 or a 90 versus an 100 will not have a significant impact on your life as a whole. When people remember your best qualities, they will think of your charm, intelligence, dedication, and kindness, not the exact number of books you've read this year or how many days you decided to rest instead of going to the gym….
