The advertisement wraps on King Metro buses make the interiors feel dreary AND taking pictures of funny stuff quite difficult. This marquee sign in Lower Queen Anne reads “Jimothy drinks for free, all others full price”

Of all the important issues in this country, Daylight Saving Time is one of the dumbest “issues” that people genuinely care about. This apparently includes the President of the United States. Shocking, I know.

While we are all celebrating new Amtrak trains here in the PNW, let us remember those who suffer from a lack of access to passenger rail 🙏 Some logical low-hanging fruit for new Amtrak lines:
Lines drawn from Saint Louis to Indianapolis and from Nashville to Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Little Rock Lines drawn from Flagstaff to Phoenix and from Denver to El Paso via Albuquerque

Democracy dies in darkness. Also: if you’re worried about private lounges hurting restaurant sales at Sea-Tac, maybe try replicating the magic of nearby PDX by lowering the damn rent/food prices? That’s more equitable for travelers than restricting businesses from operating at the airport.

I like this a lot! A couple of things I’d add: 1. Urban elevated rail is FUN! Chicago’s L and our own monorail are charming adventures. 2. If an elevated line to Ballard doesn’t include a stop in SLU, we need to also finish the Seattle Streetcar connection from Pioneer Square to Westlake.

Texas in 2026 is sort of giving “Arizona 2022” vibes. The Republican ticket is genuinely awful while Democrats have finally nominated good campaigners. A steep hill to climb, but Democrats narrowly winning several statewide positions doesn’t sound as crazy as it did a few months ago.

Frustrated by inaction on the threat of cars on their street, the 1970s residents of Delft's Tuinstraat illicitly erected barriers to curb traffic. This act of rebellion became a global revolution—inventing the woonerf (“living street”): a common space for recreation, vegetation, and socialization.
A before and after image of a residential steeet in Delft. The before is a paved space dominated by car traffic. The after a lush garden space populated by trees and planters.

~180k people voted for the dorky millennial version of David Duke in the Florida Republican primary. Not shocking, but alarming nevertheless.

It’s 59°F, fog is billowing down the streets of Queen Anne, and the air smells a bit salty. Oh, and I have a book (about climate change…) to go with my coffee. A perfect summer morning in Seattle. (Not my bike, but I wish it was!)

I usually agree with Tom but this is silly. You get to vote where you use the sidewalks, drink the water, struggle to find an affordable apartment, and call the police. …and contribute to the local government’s budget by indirectly paying property taxes + directly paying income/sales taxes.

Too early to tell if early results are a mirage for David Crowley, but Francesca Hong clearly needs Dane County to be a blowout in her favor if she’s going to have a shot at winning the (D) gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin. Rural/exurban counties are consistently favoring Crowley.

It’s a lovely evening on the South Ship Canal Trail in Seattle. (Is it really necessary to have cyclists and pedestrians stop at this intersection with a rather derelict stretch of 6th Ave. W.? Shouldn’t cars be required to yield/stop here?)
A cyclist crossing 6th Ave W with stop signs on either side of the crossing stopping cyclists, not cars. Abandoned railroad tracks and rough pavement leading up to the Lake Washington Ship Canal

SW Washington’s CD3 is going to be an intriguing race to watch Not an impressive primary result for Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, but it doesn’t seem to be a strong result for Republican State Sen. John Braun, either This could be a race where base enthusiasm (or lack thereof) hurts both nominees

Jesse @jrspnw.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
lol Missouri Republicans made a huge mistake by putting amendments 4 and 5 on the ballot w/ no statewide GOP primaries to draw out their voters *and* a fired-up Democratic electorate eager to defeat both amendments Result: both amendments are getting crushed, even in MAGA territory

I’m all for holding elected officials accountable, but this is just silly commentary from The Seattle Times. All I’ve gathered from this morning’s paper is that The Times really dislikes Katie Wilson and income taxes on the über-wealthy.
An article about a dedicated bus lane that focuses on a sticker on the mayor’s water bottle The Times refuses to endorse anyone in LD5 due to the incumbent not offering amendments to the millionaires tax

Just got home from Portland. The Pearl District and Northwest Portland (Nob Hill) have so many urbanist gems: - modal filters in the Pearl - a dedicated pedestrian bridge (yay!) over I-405 (boo) - lots older stacked flats with balconies and porches in walkable + trendy Nob Hill

My survey comments: - The intersections of Queen Anne & Boston + Crockett need traffic calming. Those are dicey crossing areas for 🚶‍♂️. - The painted crosswalk at Queen Anne Ave. and W. Garfield St. needs a curb extension where 🚙 are parked diagonally. Also… why is this survey mostly about cars?

We need moderates in moderate districts. But the idea that Democrats need to continue to triangulate and be shackled by Reaganism is gone. Comparing illiberal authoritarianism to people who advocate for a more active social welfare state is a false equivalence.
