So happy to see this much-needed road diet + bike lane project being completed at my alma mater! Northwest Arkansas has dramatically improved cycling infrastructure over the last decade or so, particularly in Bentonville, Rogers, and Fayetteville. Go by bike and Wooo Pig Sooie!
A cyclist using the new bike lane with signage clearly separating cycling from walking A bi-directional bike lane with cobblestones separating the lanes from cars and the sidewalk Maple Street before the renovation, with no protected bike lanes. More room for everyone on Maple Street!
Maple Street now features a dedicated two-way bicycle and e-scooter track and an 8-foot-wide pedestrian sidewalk, making it easier for cyclists, riders and pedestrians to get where they need to go.
At Arkansas Avenue, a new bike traffic signal detects cyclists and gives them a green light without the need to push a button.
Whether you're walking, biking or scooting, these upgrades are designed to make getting around campus easier and more connected.

Recently had this thought while driving a car through Phinney Ridge. SO many bikes use that road and there’s plenty of room for protected bike lanes Take out the turn lanes and install four-way stops, modal filters, and dedicated delivery + bus zones. Better for everyone (and minimal parking loss)

The advertisement wraps on King Metro buses make the interiors feel dreary AND taking pictures of funny stuff quite difficult. This marquee sign in Lower Queen Anne reads “Jimothy drinks for free, all others full price”

Of all the important issues in this country, Daylight Saving Time is one of the dumbest “issues” that people genuinely care about. This apparently includes the President of the United States. Shocking, I know.

While we are all celebrating new Amtrak trains here in the PNW, let us remember those who suffer from a lack of access to passenger rail 🙏 Some logical low-hanging fruit for new Amtrak lines:
Lines drawn from Saint Louis to Indianapolis and from Nashville to Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Little Rock Lines drawn from Flagstaff to Phoenix and from Denver to El Paso via Albuquerque

It’s even difficult to navigate in a car! I hope SDOT can obtain the current Kidd Valley restaurant lot and turn it into some sort of oddly-shaped signaled roundabout.

Democracy dies in darkness. Also: if you’re worried about private lounges hurting restaurant sales at Sea-Tac, maybe try replicating the magic of nearby PDX by lowering the damn rent/food prices? That’s more equitable for travelers than restricting businesses from operating at the airport.

I like this a lot! A couple of things I’d add: 1. Urban elevated rail is FUN! Chicago’s L and our own monorail are charming adventures. 2. If an elevated line to Ballard doesn’t include a stop in SLU, we need to also finish the Seattle Streetcar connection from Pioneer Square to Westlake.

I’ve been rolling my eyes at the “major access point to I-5 being blocked” commentary. The random 9th Ave slip lane to the express lanes is possibly the weirdest access point to I-5 in Seattle, and drivers only needed to go one full block out of the way to access the same entrance from Pike St!

Texas in 2026 is sort of giving “Arizona 2022” vibes. The Republican ticket is genuinely awful while Democrats have finally nominated good campaigners. A steep hill to climb, but Democrats narrowly winning several statewide positions doesn’t sound as crazy as it did a few months ago.

Frustrated by inaction on the threat of cars on their street, the 1970s residents of Delft's Tuinstraat illicitly erected barriers to curb traffic. This act of rebellion became a global revolution—inventing the woonerf (“living street”): a common space for recreation, vegetation, and socialization.
A before and after image of a residential steeet in Delft. The before is a paved space dominated by car traffic. The after a lush garden space populated by trees and planters.

~180k people voted for the dorky millennial version of David Duke in the Florida Republican primary. Not shocking, but alarming nevertheless.

I had a similar experience on Cascades recently. The train to Vancouver could’ve used a little TLC (new 🔌 outlets, upholstery, etc.) but was fine overall. The train back to Seattle? Belonged in a museum. Or a scrap yard.

When you live off campus (usually beginning sophomore year) and pay rent to a landlord? Yes, you’re indirectly paying a property tax. This is becoming quite common for students, especially at larger public institutions where newer housing is privately developed.

Jesse @jrspnw.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
I usually agree with Tom but this is silly. You get to vote where you use the sidewalks, drink the water, struggle to find an affordable apartment, and call the police. …and contribute to the local government’s budget by indirectly paying property taxes + directly paying income/sales taxes.

Mike Lindell has lost the Republican nomination for governor of Minnesota. Who will he blame for this election result? Republican primary voters?!

Jesse @jrspnw.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
I’m sure the election officials following some archaic state law to the best of their ability, but… this is kinda funny (Iron County is “reporting” <10 votes, or 1% of their turnout)

Wisconsin Democrats are choosing chaos tonight, I guess. Dane (44% in) Hong +3% Milwaukee (44%) Crowley +1% Gonna be an interesting night, folks 🧀
100 1
Jesse @jrspnw.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Yikes, these initial Dane results are not what Hong needs to even eke out a win. She’s up by 1% over Crowley with ~20% reporting. It’s early, of course, but this could be a nail biter like Michigan’s Senate primary… or a comfortable win for Crowley if Milwaukee turns out for him.
120 2
Jesse @jrspnw.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Too early to tell if early results are a mirage for David Crowley, but Francesca Hong clearly needs Dane County to be a blowout in her favor if she’s going to have a shot at winning the (D) gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin. Rural/exurban counties are consistently favoring Crowley.
