I’ve been writing something on Black thinkers & organizers during the 1880s, & you’ll be *shocked* to learn that they made an almost identical argument then—that the unstated commitment to white supremacy remained central to the party even as it ensued its defeat.

Second, the whole point of the lynching spectacle was to indict and implicate the white community involved the lynching. It tied them together; it implicated them; it bound them to each other in guilt and shame.

Earlier Wednesday, the Statesman reported that UT president’s office helped reserve LBJ Auditorium.

The reservation renewed criticism from some students and faculty members who have argued university leadership has exercised increasing influence over political events — while favoring conservative speakers — despite the university’s commitment to institutional neutrali

Du Bois was only a century early in his bulls-eye analysis of MAGA / Trump / Heritage. This from new work by Feeden Blume Oeur & Sophie Doer-Kamienny. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...
A year before the publication of BR, a major report in The Journal of Negro History detailed a view of Black Americans in history textbooks in the South that corroborated much of Boardman's own research (Reddick 1934). Du Bois (1942) later praised one of the period's major systematic book-length examinations of textbooks, The Treatment of the Negro in American Historical Textbooks (1941) by Marie Carpenter, which showed how textbooks written between 1826 and 1939 had made only incremental progress in their portrayals of Black people and Black

The assertion that "powerful cultural institutions" and the Democratic Party "treated more tradition-minded Americans as evil or backward" has become such a cliche in the punditry that people who say this feel no need to offer examples (or a single example) and journalists rarely ask them to do so.
Slade: I’ll be honest with you: Broad swaths of the American electorate, including members of some demographics that were once solid Democratic constituencies, came to feel extraordinarily resentful that both the Democratic Party and a lot of powerful cultural institutions (higher education, the mainstream media) were going all in on a sort of militant identity politics that treated more tradition-minded Americans as evil or backward.

This created a real siege mentality, where people were inclined to throw their lot in with someone whom they perceived as on their side and who said he would fight the forces that were hostile to them.

Fusionism was undoubtedly a significant force in the growth of modern conservatism, but the reliance on "3-legged stool" (free markets, virtue, anticommunism) framing can lead to the underplaying the role of opposition to the Civil Rights Act and other civil rights laws played in this growth.

That's an excellent pushback—you're right to challenge my framing.
This isn't actually "political polarization" in the technical sense.

What Polarization Actually Is
Political polarization = Two sides moving to ideological extremes and away from each other

Left moves left, right moves right
Growing ideological distance
Loss of willingness to compromise
But both sides exist in opposition
What We're Actually Seeing
This is something different—and arguably worse:

@asheeshks.org has deep dive into the Cornell Report. the report's utter disconnect begins w this opening quote from Cornell's 5th president. His tenure coincided w an earlier era of unapologetic antiBlack racism that infiltrated university campuses like Cornell. news.cornell.edu/stories/2009...
Report of the
Committee on the Future of the American University
Cornell University
September 22, 2026
“… controversy should be regarded as an invitation to move in, not a warning to keep out.”
— Edmund Ezra Day, fifth president of Cornell University (1937–1949)Black women in particular began to have a hard time at Cornell, she noted, especially when Dean of Women R. Louise Fitch would no longer allow them to live in campus dorms in the 1920s.

In the 1930s, due to the depression and the fact that people just didn't have money, along with a number of other factors, the enrollment at many universities began to decline, and so did the enrollment of black students at Cornell.

Even in sports, racial tensions flared -- during football seasons during the early 1940s, alumni communicated with the director of athletics hoping that the football coach would not field its black athletes.

By 1945, there were very few black students at Cornell.
