If an author uses AI as part of their writing process for an academic journal article—how do we feel about requesting the conversation history for the paper? It seems that it would decrease ambiguity about what “minor language adjustments” in an AI declaration means and increase transparency.

it's always odd when "you should expose yourself to more diverse ideas" always means a certain kind of conservatism instead of like, Indigenous art, new fusion foods, math paradoxes, or the Dvorak keyboard layout

I assigned random gender/ethnicity labels to scientific abstracts from the literature and then asked Claude to do a thematic analysis. Claude identified a clinical versus computational split for female/male authors and a DEI focus for Black/URM authors. All in completely random data.

I'll just note that critical race theory predicts quite a lot about the current racial retrenchment and for being *correct* it was pilloried in the press and by some academics.

guys we just cant get around it, if we want to solve literally anything in this country we HAVE to begin seriously talking about racism. pushing anti-Black racism to the outskirts of our discourse is the cause of literally all of problems, from class struggle to trans rights. its ALL the same fight.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.

An unfortunate effect of AI: for all the talk of it enabling “creativity,” many of us feel forced by its utility for plagiarism to move toward more restrictive and surveillant measures in the classroom. In the last few years the classroom is of necessity becoming more locked down than it ever was.

I ask for links to academic papers that use these exact variables. It provides 4 links. Link 1–a book that I can’t read because I don’t have a physical copy. Link 2-goes to a different paper than the one listed. Link 3-dead link. Link 4-goes to the paper listed, but does not actually use ANES data

I look back at the dataset and there is a variable name with the same format as the one in question. And tell ChatGPT. “Thanks for pointing that out! I don’t have access to the variable you’re asking about.” By this point, I’m pretty sure ChatGPT has made these variables up.

Joy Losee, Ph.D. @joylosee.bsky.social · 17/07/2025
“Oh you’re so right. Thanks for catching that. Try using this variable name.” There is no variable by that name. “Oh you’re so right again! Thanks for catching that. Actually ANES only uses that particular variable name format for internal data and not publicly available data.”

I ask for the link to the ANES data with the ego networks variables it says have been collected. The link is dead. But I know how to find the datasets on my own. It tells me the variables are in the 2008 time series. I open the data and the variables are not there. I tell ChatGPT.

Joy Losee, Ph.D. @joylosee.bsky.social · 17/07/2025
I told ChatGPT and of course “Oh thanks! You’re so right! Pew moved their data elsewhere. Try this other link.” New link is dead. Eventually it recommends requesting the data from Pew. So I move on to ANES.

It listed dataset like the ESS, World Values Survey, ANES, and Pew Research. After probing, it seemed like Pew and ANES had what I was looking for. First I asked it to link me to the Pew dataset. The link was dead. No matter, I could go to the Pew dataset list and find the data by the title.
