Good Families Don’t is now out 🎉! Written by Robert Munsch, I had the pleasure of illustrating this new edition. Here are some of my favorite pieces. Hope you enjoy my flatulent art 💨 Big thanks to wonderful art director @johnmartz.bsky.social, Tundra Books, & agent @ksonnack.bsky.social
A square format cover - In the upper half of the page is large text that is illustrated to look like a translucent gas that is translucent. Partially behind this text is a woman with medium-brown skin holding her bichon frise furiously waving one hand in front of her disgusted face, she wears a blue long sleeve top with a v neck and khaki pants with a black belt. Next to her is a white-looking man with large square glasses , blonde hair that comes to a point, and a beard. He is pinching his nose, mouth open and tongue out - also in disgust. He wears a muted green sweater with a collared white shirt beneath and khakis as well. In the foreground center bottom of the page is an elementary-aged girl with big shiny eyes, nearly black long hair, straight bangs, a headband, dressed neatly in a purple top and skirt with her hands folded in front of her. She has a sweet smile. More gas that matches the look of the title text emerges from her skirt. To the left of her and on top of the gas is thick pink san serif text that reads, "by Robert Munsch", to the right of her is "illustrated by Joy Ang". The background comprises of shades of pink gas.A scene with a gaseous fart monster in the front and center of the page. It is the same style as the green gaseous text on the cover. It has long bubbly whiskers above its tubular purple mouth. Round, cartoonish yellow teeth that sparsely fit in its large bean-shaped mouth. The monster also has a large bulbous nose. It has long noodle-y arms and legs with large hands, feet, and cracked grotesque brown nails. The monster is lying on its back on a bed in a little girl's room reading her purple-color diary. It's laughing with its eyes close and its left hand clapped on its forehead. Gaseous bits can be seen emitting from its head and "tail" as well as more transparent gas that radiates throughout the room. The girl from the cover, now in form-fitting purple poka dotted pjs is just above center of the page. She's opened the door into her room and has a terrified expression as she sees this monster intruding in her space. One hand is still on the doorknob of the open door. Her hair spikes out like a ghibli film when a character is frigtened. The room is shades of pastel purples, pinks, blues and cream. There is a soccer ball on the floor and a poster of a silly narwhal that states "Make a splash!". At her vanity is an arched mirror with a ribboned sunhat on top of it. There are polaroids tucked into the mirror below the hat and a blue 1st place ribbon on the other side. The wall where the headboard sits against has long vertical stripes of blue and pink. The headboard is another shade of pink with a wavy top design. There are white FX lines that radiate along the whole of the page centering the girl and monster. The same monster from the last image is now in an energetic pouncing position with eyes open and a large smile on its face. Its right eye has a purple swirl instead of a pupil, the left one has a dark purple dot as a pupil - the monster has yellow sclera. It holds the diary in its right hand. The monster is pouncing on the man from the cover. He is now in a green house coat with a white v neck shirt beneath and green shorts. He has 3 cartoonish leg hairs, white socks, and teal bubbly slippers. He looks shocked and terrified with his mouth wide open as he falls backwards from the monster. The woman from the cover is walking up some stairs - her left hand holds the railing. She is in profile, now wearing a matching silky night set comprising of a long sleeve top and pants in muted blue. She has cute, round closed-toe slippers with a bow. She has her dog tucked into her right arm as she also hold a partially blue crocheted hat with a pom pom and a yellow crochet hook. The dog is facing the viewer with little black dots for eyes, a content tiny smile, lines as whiskers and is very fluffy and round. Its legs and ears are all essentially spheres of the same size. There is a warm glow towards the base of the stairs and a cooler grey/blue at the top. The woman, dog and stairs all have a warm rim highlight from below.

In the first panel, one girl, Nami, says, “We’re learning about where cephalopods actually came from!” In the second panel, one girl says, “They came from space, Nami.” In the third panel, a boy leans toward Nami, who has a frustrated expression, and says, “Pfft. They came from a magic dimensional rift deep in the abyss.” In the final panel, the driver, Nami’s sibling, says, “Alright, seatbelts everyone!”

I grew up reading and loving the books of fellow Canadian, Robert Munsch. So excited to now be working on this 🍑💨💨💨
Screencap of an announcement from Publishers Weekly that reads, "Tundra Books has acquired world rights to a new edition of Good Families Don't by Robert Munsch (l.) (Love You Forever), newly illustrated by Joy Ang. The picture book tells the story about a girl who finds a big, colorful fart lying on her bed. Publication is planned for summer 2026; the author was unagented, and Kelly Sonnack at Andrea Brown Literary Agency represented the illustrator."

The garden is coming alive 🥰 (L-R) Pansies, freshly planted basil I grew from seed and rhubarb stalks that are ready to be harvested
Picture of my garden where the morning sun back-lit pansies with various beautiful colors - purple ones with a yellow and black center while others are shades of lilac, pink and aubergine. A picture of newly transplanted basil starts. They sit in fresh dirt in a medium-sized terracotta planter in the garden next to other larger black planters with roses that are just starting to put on leaves and a brown metal raised bed. Close up photo of a rhubarb, highlighting the long red stalks amidst lush, large and verdant leaves. New leaves emerge near the base of the plant.

A piece I made for the 50th anniversary edition of Magic The Gathering's Monster Manual. Thanks to AD, Fury Galluzzi - @furygalluzzi.bsky.social, for this very fun assignment!
A digital painting set in a dense forest with light sparkling through the trees shining on the following chibified monsters:

- A Red dragon near the top left
- A flying Monodrone Modron with a Rust Monster hanging on to its legs
- An Owlbear hanging on top of a beholder
- A Flumph looking surprised
- A displacer Beast
- And a Mimic with a dumb, open-mouthed smile and its purple tongue hanging out

The monsters are all looking over the shoulder of a young girl wearing an archer's garb as well as a boy in a wizard's hat holding a staff with a purple gem at its top. The children have a glow on their faces as they excitedly look at a massive tome bound in red dragon scales.

Revised the ol' "Schweizer Guide to Spotting Tangents" lecture. 1/2
Text: TANGENTS
In geometry, a tangent is when a line touches a curve at a single point.
(images illustrating this, with a curve and a circle touching the lines)
The point where they touch is called the tangent. in a drawing, this is what I call a “bump-up” tangent (more on that
later), but the term “tangent” is a bit more flexible when applied to visual art.
When an artist (or art critic, or art teacher, etc) mentions a tangent, they’re generally referring to any relationship between lines (or elements) in a drawing that interact in a way that the artist didn’t intend.
When I was a teacher, I found it helpful to differentiate the various offenses that fell under the catch-all term “tangents” and give them each a name, to make identification of problem areas in a drawing easier.

An earlier version of these examples was published online in 2011 under the title “The Schweizer Guide to Spotting Tangents.”
Text:
Long-Line Tangent
The “long-line” tangent is when the line from one subject in the drawing leads into the line of another.
(image where the line from a figure's wide-brimmed hat"becomes" the line of the roof)
See how the hat of this fella runs into the line of the roof? that’s bad!
(image where they do NOT intersect)
Not so bad!
Try to avoid near-tangents, too! Even if a line doesn’t actually connect with another, “close” isn’t great, either.
(image illustrating this point using the same iconography as above)Text:
Bump-Up Tangent
A bump-up tangent is when one element of a drawing bumps up against another.
(image where the outside a figure's elbow touches a wall)
When the bump-up is the result of different subjects touching, correct it by making one clearly overlap the other.
(Same image repeated twice, but in one the elbow is in front of the wall, and in the other behind it)
Either of these works just fine!
Sometimes using the principle of “what’s closer?” overlap won’t always be the best solution. you can do that (like the nose in the example) or you can just redraw the offending lines (like the lapel).
Images: a drawing with tangents, and that same drawing with the tangents eliminated

Text:
Beyond just the drawing itself, make sure to avoid bumping your image against the formal components of the comic: word balloons, sound effects, panel borders, etc. They’re in the image, therefore, regardless of what stage they’re introduced into the art, they’re PART OF THE COMPOSITION, and need to be treated as such.

(Image: example drawing where the balloon and panel borders are creating bump-up tangents with the drawing)

There are many publishers who insist on live (editable) balloons and dialogue text to make easier foreign sales and online publishing; I vehemently disagree with this approach, because it makes flexible what should be the sole purview of a cartoonist: the intersection of lines in the art, and lines in the art, like it or not, iNCLUDE the lines that surround a word balloon.

For this reason, LETTERiNG SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE iNKS. Then your inks can accommodate the balloons. This was standard practice until the advent of digital lettering, and while there’s nothing wrong with digital lettering, its placement in the pipeline order generally results in a poorer overall comic than would be the case were it done between the roughs/pencils stage and the inks.

a very proud Merychippus! just another one for the early horses. #paleoart #sciart
A digital drawing of Merychippus, running proudly. It's a male, and he has quite a lot of different old scars. So this one is a survivor. Or a little asshole of the herd - that's up to you to imagine. He's dark brown and white, with some dark stripes on all the legs and tail. The background is dark and simple, and there's a crescent moon above the horse.

The #Yakuza brainrot CONTINUES: "What if Goromi was more in line with Majima's personal style post-Zero and also from the 1980's" was a thought I followed to it's inevitable conclusion last night 👍🏼
Majima Goro dressed up to the nines as "Goromi," though this time it's a 1980's version that's much more in line with Majima's personal style post-Zero. She's wearing a cropped snakeskin jacket over a black leather bodikon dress, just revealing enough in all dimensions to tease the tattoos underneath. She's toying with a gold chain around her neck, and may or may not be staring down a VERY flustered Kiryu just off-screen.

Behind her is the logo of the 1980's Japanese men's magazine GORO.

colorful key splash art for Project Dragon- a group of adventurers (a musical ocarina golem, a rider mounted on a wyvern, a dimunutive cat person and a pet pinoceros) crest a hill over a sun-drenched landscape with billowing clouds and distant ruins. In the sky above, a character composed of constellations spreads their 6 arms and welcomes them to the world.
