Campbell River is a charming town on the east coast of Vancouver Island that is a great area to visit for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The area is well known as a destination for fishing; It is normally described as the "Salmon Capital of the World." We liked the area for the pleasant mix of old growth forests, great camping and fabulous coastal views, but it is also a fantastic location to go whale (or bear) watching, and has some really good restaurants.

If you are staying at the Quinsam Campground within Elk Falls Provincial Park, there are a few lovely trails to explore while you are there. We really liked the Canyon View trail that meanders along the Campbell River through the impressive Canyon that has been carved out by Elk Falls. Once you've made it to the furthest point of this hike, you'll be rewarded by the fabulous views of…

One of the nicest front country campgrounds we've stayed at on Vancouver Island is the beautiful Quinsam Campground within Elk Falls Provincial Park. It's a pretty large campground, so it's not crazily hard to book AND even has 5 sites that are first come first served. We ended up with a site along the Quinsam River, so we could hear the bubble of water while we went to sleep.

Oh, how little I would have seen on my recent Japan trips without a bicycle. With a slight mobility impairment, crowded buses and some accommodations away from public transport hubs, the bicycle, ofte...

One of the most impressive (and easy to reach) waterfalls on Vancouver Island is Elk Falls near Campbell River. This is a gorgeous location surrounded by old growth forest. You'll be able to visit three waterfalls in one trip, but the main Elk Falls is the star of the show with a suspension bridge that crosses about 30m above the canyon, giving you the best possible view of the falls.

Telegraph Cove was one of the most lovely spots we visited in the North of Vancouver Island. We loved the quaint village feel, the coffee and snacks and the amaaaazing whale museum. Tragically on December 31st 2024, a fire broke out tat destroyed a third of the boardwalk, including the pub and the whale museum. As we loved visiting this area (and as…

This lovely hike will take you to a picturesque lighthouse at the far northwestern tip of Vancouver Island. It is likely that you'll be greeted with fog, rather than epic views BUT it is is still a fun adventure. The trail starts from the lovely Nel's Bight beach, and follows the Cape Scott trail to the very end and the lighthouse at Cape Scott.

The Cape Scott trail is a fun backpacking trip that'll allow you to walk to the northwesterly tip of Vancouver Island. The most popular place to camp along the way is the beautiful beach called Nel's Bight. This area is known for it's gorgeous wild coastline, mud and changeable weather! I'd read that the trail can be a bit of a slog until you reach the beach, but if you like hiking through gnarly old growth forest, it is an absolute pleasure.

Could this be Vancouver Island's most beautiful beach? San Josef Bay is a gorgeous sandy beach on the northwest of Vancouver Island in Cape Scott Provincial Park. You do need to hike in to this beach BUT the trail is short and very easy, so much so that some folks pull wagons with their picnics or camping gear! We hiked in and then camped on the beach.

If you fancy a mini adventure on the drive North towards Port Hardy and Cape Scott on Vancouver Island; Consider stopping at Little Huson Caves in the Nimpkish Valley. This little regional park features incredible karst geology with caves, a natural bridge and gorgeous crystal clear pools where you can go for a swim. The trail is super short, so you'll probably spend more time being jostled along the FSR, than actually hiking.

Stocking Creek and Elliots Beach Park are two lovely places to explore near Ladysmith on Vancouver Island in Canada. Stocking Creek Falls was the highlight of our walk through the lush forest in the park. But as we visited on a hot day; We also needed a swim and ice-cream to cool us down after the walk. The area around Ladysmith is perfect for this!

Stoney Hill is one of those magical locations where an easy trail will lead you to spectacular views. This family friendly route is close to Duncan on Vancouver Island. The best part is, the trail winds along the bluffs above the Sansum Narrows, so instead of hiking to one viewpoint, you'll be treated to several views along the top of steep cliffs.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse is a historical landmark on the Juan de Fuca straight, near the community of Shirley on Vancouver Island, BC. Getting to this picturesque spot is a short drive from the highway, then a super short walk. The lighthouse itself is a rare design from the early 20th century; Which still works, just now it is all automated. Plus, there is a chance you'll see whales or orcas (
