I am back in my beloved Philadelphia once again, at the Met to see Tori Amos, using a ticket I bought on a whim on Wednesday. I love the freedom of spontaneity!

Slightly less than 9 years ago, after buying my Wee Ruadh and discovering it did not have a cd player, I started listening to *all* the music I own on my iPod in alphabetical order. Today, on the way to work, ‘ZZ Top Goes to Egypt’ by Camper Van Beethoven came on and the saga is complete.

Let’s play two! @lhvironpigs won game 1 pretty decisively (mirroring the Phils’ score, but in a good way). I’m wearing lots of layers, so it’s kind of perfect out here! ⚾️

Happy Sheelah's Day. This feast, largely no longer celebrated in Ireland, commemorates either St Patrick's wife or mother, who probably didn't exist. So let's celebrate a similarly-named mysterious figure today instead: the sheela na gig!

Blessed Solstice, all. Alt text has a poem I share this time of year. TLDR: wherever you look/go today, it’s towards the light.
Upward shot of blue lights at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pa 2023

Blessed Solstice, all.

Blessing for the Longest Night

All throughout these months
as the shadows
have lengthened,
this blessing has been
gathering itself,
making ready,
preparing for
this night.

It has practiced
walking in the dark,
traveling with
its eyes closed,
feeling its way
by memory
by touch
by the pull of the moon
even as it wanes.

So believe me
when I tell you
this blessing will
reach you
even if you
have not light enough
to read it;
it will find you
even though you cannot
see it coming.

You will know
the moment of its
arriving
by your release
of the breath
you have held
so long;
a loosening
of the clenching
in your hands,
of the clutch
around your heart;
a thinning
of the darkness
that had drawn itself
around you.

This blessing
does not mean
to take the night away
but it knows
its hidden roads,
knows the resting spots
along the path,
knows what it means
to travel
in the company
of a friend.

So when
this blessing comes,
take its hand.
Get up.
Set out on the road
you cannot see.

This is the night
when you can trust
that any direction
you go,
you will be walking
toward the dawn.

It’s 8 feet high and 6 feet wide and finished with wooded panels on the bottom, topped with panels full of fantastical plant and animal life and a geodesic dome of blue. The dome from the inside. Philip Lloyd Powell (1919-2008)
Walnut
Museum purchase funded by the Mandel Society for Art Acquisition, Beveridge Moore and Henry Morof Trust, and George C. Benson in honor of his friend, John Horton. 2008.6
Philip Lloyd Powell moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania, just after World War II and built his home, studio, and shop along Route 202. By 1951, Powell was selling modern furniture by Herman Miller and Knoll, George Jensen products, and Isamu Noguchi lamps, and he began designing his own line of lamps and wood, slate, and metal furniture inspired by George Nakashima and Wharton Esherick.
From 1955 until 1966, Powell shared a showroom in New Hope with artist Paul Evans (1931-1987), where this fireplace was located. Tall and shaped like a tree trunk, Powell's fireplace surround features what is considered the artist's finest and most sophisticated carving technique, where he gouges the wood to exaggerate the grain pattern and the material's irregularities.
