It was only in April that I covered similar, but less formal conversations happening in astrophysics. It's wild how fast these "why are we even doing this?" discussions are moving. Also wild: the comparative clarity and force of this statement from the Fields Medalists.

If you're fortunate enough to see the solar eclipse, here's my personal suggestion: don't check the time once you're there and waiting. You have never needed a clock less. It doesn't know anything. The true reference frame is right there, big as can be.

I would bet that the height of language diversity a few millennia ago, with tens of thousands of tongues, was in some ways also a golden age for human knowledge of nature. Imagine tens of thousands of ecological and agricultural and seafaring vocabularies, of constellations in the sky.

The astrobiology angle on this kind of thing is often oversold, but the interstellar medium fascinates me. Unseen smoke particles drifting far apart like the smallest possible free-floating planets, buffeted in starlight and particle winds, little crystal gardens of chemistry and tiny geology.

We actually tried something like this in the 1890s. It was branded as spacey and futuristic then too. It was stupid, wasteful, and ugly, so we stopped, but go on, brilliant trailblazing disruptors, you do you (in front of all of humanity). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlig...

Turns out light pollution is giving mosquitos a nice shoulder season in the fall, where they can ignore cooling temperatures and keep biting and breeding. Forget just extending each day. The fun never has to stop! (If you're a mosquito.)

Disenchantment is a big theme in the science/environmental writing I like to read and write. I think there positive things about immanent and animistic worldviews. But this reporting gives me pause: a grim vision of life in what other Americans are seeing as (in Sagan's words) a demon-haunted world.

This vision of the future sucks, and I've spent the bulk of my thirties writing a book that explores this and so much related stuff, even as the issue has surged and squirmed forward over the same timeframe. It's by far the hardest and IMO best thing I've ever done. I promise you can read it soon!

the Dr. Oz arc: 1) Uncommonly ambitious, excels in elite institutions. 2) Super generous to media; ask any space journalist. 3) Discovers the attention economy. 4) Attention, good! 5) Spurning by "establishment" drives feedback: contrarianism, feelings of martyrdom. 6) Perfect fit for 2026.

My spoiler-free key to really enjoying Disclosure Day (which I liked a lot) is to realize it's interested in religious belief and disenchantment, not alien life, and second that despite smartphones it is not set now but in the 70s (the conspiracy thriller part) and the 90s/00s (the TV news part).

Maybe the real root assumption in the case for space data centers is that some people decided investments doubling is boring but 10x, 100x, 1000x is cool and can be wished into being *if* enough rich people play along and *if* you can even vaguely gesture at paths to scaling up by these multiples.

Hard agree, MacDonald nails this. "Landing on the Moon or launching a man into space are not particularly credible signals of goodwill, peace, or solidarity... [it] is a credible indicator of technical acumen, a capacity for brute force, and an abundance of resources and their centralized control."
