These were all brilliant speakers! Thank you again to @alexolder.com and @lurkmoophy.bsky.social for another wonderful, organic, homemade, wholesome conference.
Luke on stage giving thanks to all of the speakers.

The @webdevconf.com somehow finished early so we had an extra bonus talk from @lurkmoophy.bsky.social The intro alone took about 10 mins as Luke told us the various things that they have tried to do. 😂 But that was sort of the point. They talked about the effect of doing too many things at once.

Our last talk was by @paavandesign.com who talked about how to make our designs make us feel calmer. Even just a notifications settings page on your OS can feel quite intense. So how do we do 'calm design'? A feeling that it's handled and you can just relax?

Now those in early careers are learning that they can have instant answers rather than slowing over time bumping into issues and retaining that knowledge. This is known as never-skilling in one scientific paper, observed by people working in medicine.

We learn from short term memory, practice and then things stick in our long term memory. But with LLM use, that is affecting your learning. And it's even affecting how you receive feedback. And the less experienced you are, the more they're going to impact your learning.

The next talk was by @jesslynnrose.bsky.social and @rivea0.bsky.social as a dynamic duo. Talking about how the AI hype that is everywhere right now. And how that is affecting our skills. It felt like necessary therapy for all of us!

We need to practice non-judgment. Which brings psychological safety and you can catch issues early because people feel comfortable talking about them. Otherwise we bring our own interpretation which distorts what we are listening to.

We've had @amyhupe.bsky.social who has worked for us at the BBC!! We loved it when she was with us. She was talking about whether we have a listening deficit in the UK. How well are we listening to one another? And how is it affecting us?

You can help the user by doing things like telling them what you're doing to do with the information you give. And you can do usability testing to really understand users' thoughts. See how you can avoid forcing people to lie to get around your questions.

We've had a lovely lightning talk from @cjforms.bsky.social about when we lie on forms. And often it's because we need to muddle through the form and we're not given valid options. Or we want to protect our privacy.

Creativity is not the same as art, design and aesthetics. But it contributes to all of them. Hidde gave us an incredible overview of how art affects us and inspires us... Or doesn't! What it does to an audience is what it's all about.

I'm the next talk, @hidde.blog told us about how Ada Lovelace was the original dev rel. Dreaming up ways to use Charles Babbage's machines with algorithms. The history of computer science is so interesting. But that doesn't mean it can replace creativity. @webdevconf.com

We had Duncan Petrie talking about some incredible and creative ways of using requestAnimationFrame which involved Fabergé eggs and a springy chicken crossing the road and very well animated spiders! @webdevconf.com

And you could have some pseudo elements to style all of the different components of the range slider.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 13/06/2026
The nice thing about this markup is that you get a good fallback of two sliders on browsers that don't support it.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 13/06/2026
There is an explainer on OpenUI for this extended range control. It involves a new element: a rangegroup. Nice and simple and works like a fieldset. you can contain all of your range controls in there.

At @css.cafe we have @utilitybend.com is talking about the work he and others are doing at OpenUI for dual slider controls. There are so many out there on the web.

I'm at @css.cafe and Marco Christian Krenn is talking about design systems and auto generating with code their colour system. They have a similar colour layering system to us at the BBC but I love how it's so automated.

Nooo it's the end. @ohhelloana.blog rounds us off. The LLMs are only learning from this amazing community. Go and build great things.

Go out and build your 💩 everyone! We have the most powerful developer platform in the world. Build great adaptive stuff!!!

There are lots of things that CSS doesn't know like the scroll bar width, the position of the pointer, element geometry, the value of inputs, the device sensors. This is all stuff that JavaScript knows but not CSS. Adam made a JS library so that you can get this info in the CSS.

Anchor is one of the most powerful things in our toolbelt that we've had in a while. Anchor can help us morph things. Adam has a cool article about how this works. Really cool effect.

Give hints to the browser with content properties.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
We can be intelligent with our components by getting them to adapt and change based on the components next to them.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Are we thinking about how our page will look when it's printed? The component can own these styles. We don't need a special print stylesheet.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Do continuity. View transitions help morph things so that users can see what's changing.

Oh Adam is our third speaker who has made a solar system.

Annoyed by the piss yellow of auto filled fields. Do your own styling.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
What can we do to inputs when they're empty. Guide the eyes of our users.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
What can you do to the background when you're in full screen?
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Use:focus-within. Make something glow like the entire form when an input is in focus.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Think about the orientation. You can even do this with container queries. Change how a layout flows based on that.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Use container queries to track when they're stuck. Or if you've got something that's got round corners but it's touching the edge of the viewport, use a container query to do that.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Use scroll driven animations to work out when your component in view. Stagger when things animate into the screen.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
If we're using a variable font, we can change the GRAD to reduce weight on dark mode since fonts look thicker on dark mode.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
You can do a frosted tint. It's not just about colours! Frosted glass adapts intelligently.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Prefer Vs opt in. Aaaahhh I got so excited about the last point that I missed this one.
110
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
We can derive our colours and have less code to define stuff like colours! Here's an example of how the new version of open props will create colours. And then take those colours, work out the contrast and put them in semantic colour tokens.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Use clever sibling selectors to know how to change based on what is next to you.

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
We can animate to auto now so do it. Let animations respect the intrinsic size of your content.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
And we have Intrinsic web design now but we're still not doing it. We're all different people and buy products that adapt to us. We have ranges and limitations. So when you make components, get stuff to fit the content!
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Read the room. Try to not care more and use stuff like currentcolor to control less and adapt and sniff and use what it's near to.
110
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Style queries!! Get the value of a variable to create adaptive and intelligent components.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Any time we render a dynamic list with varying numbers of items, do quantity queries and adapt the content to the number of items.
100
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
We can use named container queries to name zones on our website and components can know what zones they're in and adapt their designs to that. Same with container dimension queries.
110
Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Same with preferences. Our Lego components should be changing to respect these. We can't just throw our hands up at these things. These are moments where we can shine as authors for our users. And use logical properties!!!

Josh Tumath @joshtumath.uk · 12/06/2026
Our platform is amazing. We've got the device size and we've got the orientation. But we don't think about orientation. Think about landscape more! Think about how behaviour can change depending on touchscreens Vs mouse/pen.
