Unfortunately, I think Max Landis' Bright kinda killed any chance of this being a thing, as unlikely as it ever was.

Nor am I saying every person who has been part of the Greek system is guilty. But we're talking a "you gotta kick the Nazis out of the bar right away or it's now a Nazi bar" kind of situation. Whatever it meant to you, the whole is tainted and you gotta reckon with that.

I will allow, of course, that there are non-Greek-system fraternities and sororities that are outside this criticism, but when we talk about these problems we're generally not talking about, say, Acacia.

There is no function of a university which is not better served by the elimination of this system; it is a parasite on higher education enshrined by a history inexorably linked to privilege and the freedom from real consequences afforded by that privilege.

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It is not unique in this regard, but it is unique in the deliberate blind eye which is turned upon it. Greek orgs are treated as inherently positive by default, and when terrible things that occur within them we are assured that these are isolated incidents. They are not, as repeated evidence shows.

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
An important thing to understand is that (as others have noted in various ways) we have to view the Greek system in particular as one which specifically inculcates a morality where rape and sexual assault are condoned.

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It boggles my mind that parents feed their children into this system. "Sure, reputationally, the Greek system is associated with alcoholism, drug use, criminality, rape, and sexual assault, but... They're learning leadership!"

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
My partner asked me about this case, and my response was, "the Greek system delenda est," if you'll forgive the cross-linguistic stretch.

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
My time there was a quarter-century ago, and young me was nowhere near as aware or informed on the subject as I am now, but even then it was sorry of ambiently understood that, "oh, yeah, [frat] is sexual assault central," and there were at least several to fill in that blank.

I've been thinking a lot about the Cornell rape case, as an alumnus of that institution. Literally every new piece of information is, of course, horrifying, but the most horrifying thing is how unsurprising it all is

A wonderful piece of art and also one of my favorite eras of X-Men. The Krakoa era felt new and different in a way nothing else had. A chance to explore what being a mutant could mean if it wasn't being defined by non-mutants. To tell stories that were more than "hated and feared".

As noted, this is just prosperity gospel for techbros. It's also the same basic bullshit as objectivism, except they've caught on that everybody correctly recognizes objectivists as selfish pricks, so they're pretending it's actually "altruism"... that just happens to justify whatever they want.
110
Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Of course, the argument is also farcical in context: The "far future" being discussed is "millions, billions, and trillions" of years in the future. Homo sapiens is well under 1 million years old! There's no reason to particularly think the species will even exist in another million years.
110
Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The premise of the argument cannot sustain itself. It's a narcissistic fantasy born of the outsized wealth and influence accrued to the people who have come to espouse it. It is a prosperity gospel for the techbro atheist crowd, where their material success is itself evidence of their moral worth.

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Gerhard Schrader's research, intended to help fight hunger in the world, would be the basis of the development of VX nerve agents. Profoundly influential! And yet that influence cannot be considered a moral good.
110
Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The assumption here is that being "positioned to influence the far future" is, itself, of moral worth. Why? "Of influence on" and "morally desirable" are wholly independent qualities. Ronald Reagan was of influence on AIDS policy in the US in the 80s, but that influence was morally unconscionable.
110
Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The refutation of the argument made by "effective altruists", that, morally, we should prioritize saving the lives of those in rich countries over those in poor countries because they are "better positioned to influence the far future", is contained in the argument itself.

The 40 hour work week. Compensation for overtime. The right to organize and strike. These were not inherent rights given to all in the US and Canada. They were fought for by the courageous workers who came before us. On Labor Day, we remember how far we've come, as well as our fight left ahead.

Art by @reforest-kelley.bsky.social. A reminder for Labor Day.
Fan art of Chief Miles O'Brien, Leeta, and Rom from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The three are seated in Quark's bar. Miles is explaining something to the other two. The upper caption reads, "The boss needs you, you don't need the boss"; the lower caption reads, "Labor is entitled to all it creates".

Without change, this is an industry in hospice, and we are headed for a 1983-style crash. What emerges after is anybody's guess.

If critical and commercial success offers no protections from the voracious maw of capitalism, what possible motivation do the developers have to give their talents and efforts to these companies?

It's been said before, but the release of Zero Company and the revelation that 80% of the people who worked on it were furloughed really drives home that success and failure are treated the same by this industry.

It’s worse than this. Having been in the room with many of them (long ago, before I knew they were psychopaths), the tycoons who are left running the industry have an active contempt for ordinary people, including their own workers. They actively want to oppress, control and punish them.

There are no video games without video game developers. Trillionaire corporations will continue to treat devs as line items on a balance sheet unless we fight back. Join us on August 18th to #SaveGameWorkers, as we rally across nine studios in the US and Canada. More location details to come soon.

This is also why techbros like Elon want humanoid robots so much. They want people they can force to work without paying them.

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
Do I think they're sentient? Absolutely not. But we should not be skipping this part of it. If you really believe these things are or have the capacity to be sentient, it is morally unconscionable to bring them into slavery.

Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
Thinking beings are persons, not things. Subjects, not objects, if you want to be Kantian about it. This also applies to physical robots, humanoid or otherwise. If they are sentient, they're people.
130
Josh Moretto @joshmoretto.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
An under-discussed part of the fairly stupid "are llms sentient" question is the fact that if they were, it would be slavery to use, still, and force them to work.
