Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 11/09/2026It's common knowledge that automated tools can only test ~35% of WCAG success criteria. I'm fairly confident that with some more work, we'll be able to automate more than 50%. Accessibility testing needs to be more affordable, and automation is one of the most obvious ways of doing that. 000
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 11/09/2026The incumbent automated accessibility tools like axe-core are limited by the fact that they test a static snapshot of a web page. I've been building brand new audits that use real browsers to interact with pages how a user would, and the source code is now on GitHub: github.com/A11y-Pulse/a...github.comGitHub - A11y-Pulse/audits: Browser-based WCAG testing for things static accessibility scanners like axe-core and Lighthouse can't test.Browser-based WCAG testing for things static accessibility scanners like axe-core and Lighthouse can't test. - A11y-Pulse/audits 120
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 25/06/2026I've spent pretty much every spare evening for the few weeks reengineering the A11y Pulse scanner to be as fast as possible. I think it might be the fastest accessibility scanner... in the world. www.a11ypulse.com/blog/how-we-...a11ypulse.comHow we built the fastest accessibility scanner in the world | A11y PulseA deep dive into the architecture and design decisions behind A11y Pulse, the world's fastest accessibility scanner. 020
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 11/06/2026Fascinating thread - thanks for writing this all up, Josh! 020
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 11/06/2026The challenge for an audit like this is finding a way for the majority of indicators to be auditable by the "fast path" (computed style comparison) with minimal -ideally zero- false positives. Checking WCAG 2.4.13 compliance will almost certainly require skipping the fast path more often. 001
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 11/06/2026The audit currently only checks WCAG 2.4.7 (focus indicator presence) but I am already working on support for 2.4.13 which is more strict about indicator width and contrast. 100
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 11/06/2026I wrote an automated accessibility audit that checks if elements have a focus indicator. As far as I know, no other commercial a11y tools automate this due to the computational overhead. It will be source-available soon, but for now I have written about it here: www.a11ypulse.com/blog/how-to-... 253

Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 10/04/2026It feels like it's been a lifetime since I wrote content instead of code, but I'm finally back at it! I put together this March newsletter for A11y Pulse, covering what we shipped last month: www.a11ypulse.com/blog/newslet...a11ypulse.comA11y Pulse - March 2026 Newsletter: PDF accessibility reports, our new API, and your scan history in one placeDoes it feel like the first few months of this year have gone fast, or is it just me? There's been a lot happening in the accessibility space this year already. 051
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 09/02/2026This sounds really cool! Are you using it purely for rank/order, or also to limit the number of pages you report on? 120
Joseph Wynn @joseph.likesdogs.nz · 24/01/2026It's genuinely such a pleasure to work on A11y Pulse. I struggled for years to find motivation to work on side projects, but accessibility is something I'm really passionate about. I'm looking forward to putting more time into it this year! 060

I will say if you've enjoyed using React in the past and are feeling overwhelmed by how different "modern" React is, then I'd strongly recommend picking up Preact instead. 050
