werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

if a restaurant takes walk-ins I always walk-in. The tables reserved for walk-ins are often the better, more visible tables anyway; restaurants don’t want to hold a visible table without a customer because it makes the space look unpopular. Just walk in. You’ll be fine.

new bevy release is neat, bsn is a nice ergonomic improvement. Every time I fiddle with it over a weekend it’s better than the last time, and the showcase stuff in their discord has gotten so much more impressive over time.

genuinely I don’t understand people who argue that AI slop in software engineering is OK because that problem existed before. If something makes a problem worse, that thing is bad. The fact that the problem existed previously at a lesser magnitude does not absolve the thing that made it worse.

868-BACK has a difficulty modifier called “Vibe progging!” where it ignores which ability you want to use and picks a move at random from the set of valid moves. Incredible.

I have been blessed by two separate Wienermobile sightings in less than six weeks, one in Salt Lake City and one in Chicago
Wienermobile parked, partially obscured by a bush, with mountains in the background, in Salt Lake CityWienermobile in traffic, stopped at a traffic light. The foreground is motion-blurred. In Chicago.

Apparently the Pope has read Baudrillard.
A tweet from Pope Leo XIV that reads: “When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.”

I’m not really sure what the point of mastodon is if there’s not a strong sense of specificity of space. What’s the point of having separate domains if they don’t each have their own norms? It’s not clear to me what the value prop is of federated administration without per-domain culture.

it sure does seem like public sentiment for AI is incredibly low, but a portion of the tech industry is either unwilling to accept it or unable to recognize it

a lot of people who love genAI love it because they were incapable of creating anything, but there’s a second group that was always capable, who like genAI almost exclusively because it gives them the sensation of being in control of an other, engaging with it as a type of synthetic dominance

Voting in the IL primaries has made it even more apparent how necessary ranked choice voting is. Serious question, how do we make this happen, IL??

Jordan Orelli @jordan.orel.li · 17/03/2026
it’s wild how much attention there is on IL-9 from people who think the race is two people when there are 15 candidates and at least three are experienced, local, and progressive. This election needed Ranked Choice Voting so, so badly

back when I worked at Jackbox Games, we realized that people who were using Amazon Fire TVs would launch our games and then never actually hit exit at the end. The games were actually silently running in the background, continually reconnecting, continually refreshing their room reservations.
