The Epic Store Launcher vibe coding messaging is a decent case study in mismarketing a product re-launch, because instead of just marketing *what* they made, they’re also marketing *how* they made it, dragging the product down with the need to market AI vibe coding.

Apologies for the rapid fire replies but this is more of the same. How does it take 5 seconds to load an application launcher? That shit should be instantaneous, if I’d written something like that and it took multiple seconds to display a list of installed games I’d be ashamed.

Even if nothing else why would you lead your product announcement with “eh, it’ll do, ship it”?

I own a house and think it would be neat if other people could as well, I’m aware it’s considered old fashioned to think of a house as a place you live rather than a particularly awkward bank account though.

The solution to this being a massive drain on the NHS is so obviously to start training and hiring more people qualified to do diagnosis under the NHS instead of outsourcing it all to private providers.

Jon Wood @jonwood.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I’m paying a frankly eye watering amount of money for prescriptions and regular checkups because the doctor who diagnosed me wasn’t wearing his NHS ID at the time of diagnosis and instead did so privately, which means my GP has flat out refused to take on prescribing. Absolute madness.

I love the idea that it thinks that was what you were doing. Like you sat down and went “right; this is my fashion book era, gonna buy as many as I can before it passes”.

honestly if you’re booking so many flights you need an AI agent to do it for you I think you should urgently reassess your ecological impact

Ok, but they appear to be going for legitimately horrifying generated images of something that might be food, which is *worse* than bad food photography where you’re at least not making people think alien insects may emerge from their lunch.

And this is why I’ll never ship a game. (I’m mostly alright with that, but I do love the *idea* of doing game development)

I think it’s much funnier if you’re both into games and have worked for tech/software companies. Even then it’s wildly variable from episode to episode, some I found absolutely hilarious, a few quite moving, lots of them were simply filling time while I ate dinner.

This doubles down on the sense of them being two different groups, and means that they’re going to grow up with less exposure to people from different walks of life. It also means that the people who often hold most sway have no incentive to demand better state provision because they don’t use it.

Jon Wood @jonwood.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
There’s a more subtle aspect to this as well, in that you’re effectively segregating society from an early age into provision for the well off and provision for the poor. All the rich people’s kids go to private nursery together, while the poor people’s kids go to state nursery.

Or, and hear me out, the shop that sells baked potatoes could take a photo of one of those baked potatoes before handing it to a customer.

I’d love to know what the people writing pasta directions use to cook the stuff because not once have I seen it cook in less than twice the time stated on the pack. “11-13 minutes” says the pack, I’m 20 minutes in and you could still stab someone with one of these pasta bows.

Even if this were true you don’t decide a tool is completely useless because it can’t be used for some tasks. I’m not aware of anyone saying we’re going to ban all forms of transport but bikes.

“I’m going to use a graph database” is almost always the wrong answer to a question but I think this might be the one time in a million it’s the right answer given you literally want to store a graph as it evolves over time.

The plane can cope with that just fine, the passengers probably had a bit of a moment. 60m/s is the sort of descent you do when a window just blew out and ejected all the nicely pressurised air full of oxygen into the sky.

And while that’s going on we’re all scrolling through social media being presented with idealised versions of other people’s lives where they can afford ten holidays a year and have idyllic houses while we’re sat in our barely affordable run down flats.

We’re in a weird place currently where luxuries unimaginable to someone from 1986 such as huge TVs and supercomputers that fit in your pocket are accessible to basically everyone while fish & chips for a family cost a day’s wages for anyone working a retail job.

So much of what’s wrong with the country is the property ladder. Gotta buy yourself a flat so you can wait a few years and sell it to buy a house, rinse and repeat indefinitely. Or maybe don’t sell it, you can rent it out for free money while begrudging your tenants wanting hot water.

Once my son gets older I think I’ll probably end up doing something like this. I just love the idea of waking up in the morning, maybe climbing a hill before work, spending a day looking out on somewhere nice, a wander by a lake over lunch. Sounds like the dream to me.

The recycling lobby really played a blinder in making everything about individuals sorting cardboard into a different bin rather than big business changing their behaviour in any way beyond printing Net Zero on the packaging for all this shit nobody needs.

Woah there cowboy. “You don’t care about traumatised inner-city kids” is quite a leap from “there’s a lot of people who do just have ADHD, I’m not sure about this”. I can absolutely believe there’s overlap, PTSD is brutal and does do similar things to the brain, but also a lot of people have ADHD.

I think this is the core of it for me. If you’re going to teach a computer to make phone calls for you at least be upfront about the fact this is a computer on the phone and not an assistant called Hailey.

You can do this, and I did for several years, but for reasons that are beyond me despite monitors and TVs being basically the same thing now monitors tend not to have useful features like HDMI-CEC which allows for switching to the correct input when turned on, and volume control.

It’s a massively uneven effort. Spotify are presumably slapping legal threats on anything they deem to be using stuff they have audiobook rights on via automated systems which require no effort at all, while on the other side creators of small podcasts are having to fight it.

One of the exhausting things about the current climate is when the weird conspiracies about how Facebook terms are so they can take your niece’s birthday party photos and turn them into coffee table books for public sale or something turn out to be true.

That stuff is fine, it’s the “cook for 22 minutes at 180c” for oven stuff that drives me mad. Oven thermostats/dials have about as much precision as a blind person parallel parking, there’s no way that extra 2 minutes is justified vs “cool for about 20 minutes, but really until it looks cooked”.

I feel like I’m going slowly mad being stuck between the AI Will Do Everything By Next Tuesday people on one side and the AI Has Literally Never Worked For Any Task Ever people on the other while I sit here making use of it for things where it makes sense and not when it doesn’t.

The infuriating thing about these headlines now is that “AI” has lost all meaning. Is this a machine learning model trained specifically to flag potential airspace conflicts before they become a problem (good, eases controller load) or an LLM set loose to respond to ATC calls without enough context?

It literally took someone turning up with authorisation to turn off my gas supply for me to pay the outstanding gas bill I could easily afford, it was just that I’d have to call up and do admin so I kept putting it off.

This is a genuinely great idea, especially if they can jettison continuity and not be carrying however many decades of baggage they’ve built up to be nitpicked by the obsessives whenever something is wrong. Can’t be too hard for the time and space show. Whoops, we got stuck in an alternate timeline.
