Vanity shot of a WIP trench reconciling the low end of a drainage ditch to the high end of an old creek, both of them recently dug out, enlarged, and aggressively regraded to guard against flooding. Basically, a moat.
A trench connects a muddy ditch to a creek at a right angle. Irrigation pipes and garden are visible.

Over the last two months, have completely replaced gym time with digging and digging accessories. Here's the latest indulgence. My life is work, kids, writing when rarely feasible, and dirt. Dirt in all varieties. Dirt at all hours. A little more dirt as a treat.
Overhead selfie of a smiling, bearded, bald man in a virulent green shirt above an open trench with exposed pipe.

til this core memory has a sequel (released almost 30 years after the original). baby's first thriller, featuring eugenicist villains who are both colossal, ineffective dipshits and catastrophically evil. haddix mastered the kiddie dystopia thing long before the wave hit. underappreciated talent
Running out of time, Margaret peterson haddix. The very 90s illustration features a girl in front of a long cabin in a prairie dress stepping through a portal in the air to a modern age where she's wearing jeans an there are cars. It is super cool if it's 1996 and you're in 3rd grade.

In my quest to eat healthier, made a cauliflower and lentil soup so irredeemable that four hours of aggressive ventilation later, there are ongoing Febreze patrols and bedtime impacts. I have become persona non grata, which is appropriate for someone in the biochemical weapons research business.

I'm just sad. I keep thinking about how, in the Great Depression, the women's student organization at UAlberta set up a quiet free soup kitchen for unemployed, unmarried women students. How did we get back to this? How the hell?

It's one fifth, at least where I work. One fifth of undergrads are severely food insecure by Health Canada standards. One fifth is also the number who are currently skipping meals at least once a week due to the cost of food. Don't even get me started on how bad things are for Indigenous students.

This novelette is my second Recommended Story in Locus; the first was 'Crickets in Lost Light,' another Ander Carmora piece. 'Fletcher's Flights' finds our turncoat tithe-collector older and dustier, skulking in the prairie coulees between the Five Deserts and the ravenous Churchlands.

Any Vietnam War Historians available to look at this image? It’s a magazine clipping attributed to someone and I wanted to learn more about it. The original clipping has been lost, but is at least 20 years old.
A magazine clipping of a black and white photograph, showing what appears to be a radio operator. He looks at the camera with sadness or resignation. He has a watch on his left wrist and his hair is closely shaved. There is a pot of some kind behind him on the left. Beyond that is some kind of backpack. Other men sit behind, facing away from the camera, mostly in shadow.
