InkTober day 4 ‘Cactus’. The Ice Age version of a cactus; an Udam Bone Tree. Only realized as I was drawing it that I picked two mammoth skull subjects in a row but I really like the results. Done in brushpen with some white gelpen. #InkTober #InkTober2026 #inkdrawing #sciart

I was talking to my friend Mae today about how I wish more people cared about and read short stories. A great short story will take only twenty minutes to read but stick with you for twenty years. Wildly powerful artform! What's a short story that fits that description for y'all?

not objecting but observing: why is every other horror novel florid with big, grandma-couch cabbage roses right now? it's like the only way books are allowed to be maximalist lately. I'd take an exploded joann's floral aisle over a silhouette of one (1) plot-relevant item any day. just. why flowers?
Kathleen jennings' honeyeater, with a nice painting of a lady shrouded in flowers from the nose up,.or possibly turning into flowers, or made of flowers? I haven't finished this one yetNoah medlock's a botanical daughter, another lady covered in flowers. On this case fairly book accurateJohanna van Veen's blood on her tongue, a dog surrounded by huge, bloody blooms. The dog is not turning into flowers, so that's different. The book barely features plantsV Castro's the haunting of Alejandra, and in this one there's a somewhat artsy remove in that the woman is a paper cutout who has been mostly replaced with flowers. There were some flowers in the book but not a huge thing?

so much of my reading is horror that making october extra spooky is a struggle, so i'm gonna post as i go and share the scares with the power of multiplicity. starting with @horrorsong.blog's The Wingspan of Severed Hands, a story where "it was all a dream" presages not amelioration but certain doom
The Wingspan of Severed Hands, by Joe Koch. The cover is an appropriately surrealist smear of a headless body being devoured by sand or light or lace, a beam of queasy yellow light, a single hand that is the only focused bit, and multiple flailing x-ray echoes of the hand that turn it ghostly even in its definition

still bugging me because it's so specifically if ineffectively scuzzy. like this part is generic word salad full of factual inaccuracies despite being mostly reconstituted mush from the author goodreads page I always forget I have.
I came across "Death Loves Frogs" in Love Letters to Poe, Volume 1 on Goodreads and was struck by how you refuse to let Poe inspired fiction stay either imitative or predictable. In your story, you do not just echo gothic conventions; you build an atmospheric fable focused on mortality and folklore motifs, and you let surreal nature imagery carry the weight of classic psychological paranoia. Placing that alongside contemporary authors toasting Poe's legacy around grief, madness, ancestral curses, and psychological decay is exactly the kind of reframing that makes gothic horror matter, and the anthology holding a 4.14 average across 35 ratings shows readers are responding. Writing across science fiction, fantasy, horror, and slipstream while teaching science just outside Chicago, being an out of practice black belt, a mediocre birdwatcher, a terrible knitter, and an avid reader bullied by disreputable house pets tells me the wit and the range in your voice are not a persona. Writing as a trans woman using ey/em/eir and she/her pronouns, and building worlds that weave atmospheric eerie elements with highly descriptive worldbuilding, tells me the perspective you bring to speculative fiction is lived rather than assembled.

new (to me) mutation of ai author spam today. targeted an old anthologized story, blathered for paragraphs about past publications in a way I haven't seen yet? it's an incoherent mess and pretty funny but as with all things slop there's a sinister undercurrent. and honing in on short fiction is new?

It was speculated in the 17th century that this newly discovered Middle Jurassic fossil, likely from a Megalosaurus, might belong to a Roman war elephant or a biblical giant. In 1763, naturalist Richard Brookes noted the obvious & named the fossil 'Scrotum humanum' #WyrdWednesday
Illustration from the 1677 'Natural History of Oxford-shire' by Robert Plot, first Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, who systemically studied paleontology and natural history. Physician Richard Brookes had his 'A System of Natural History', 6 vols. published in 1763 and was a prolific writer and translator. In the 1990s Brookes' description was officially rejected 🎨 The 17th century b&w illustration is thought to be of a Megalosaurus femur but, for now, info remains inconclusive until new discoveries and interpretations are made.

til this core memory has a sequel (released almost 30 years after the original). baby's first thriller, featuring eugenicist villains who are both colossal, ineffective dipshits and catastrophically evil. haddix mastered the kiddie dystopia thing long before the wave hit. underappreciated talent
Running out of time, Margaret peterson haddix. The very 90s illustration features a girl in front of a long cabin in a prairie dress stepping through a portal in the air to a modern age where she's wearing jeans an there are cars. It is super cool if it's 1996 and you're in 3rd grade.

if you want to write a regular 1st person pov you just can. we've all agreed to just accept that without in-universe justification. if you write an ordinary enough 1st person novel but wrap it up in epistolary form, then people will *notice.* they will think and ponder.
