Here, have a Roy Crane panel.
A panel from Buz Sawyer, drawn by Roy Crane. It's a textbook lesson is the creation of mood, depth, and focus through the use of massed areas of black, artfully placed cast shadows, and simple aerial perspective.

Ditko was great at this in his Amazing Spider-Man. It's like a facially-specific Meskin Effect. Mort Meskin used multiple images of the same character in the same panel to imply speed in his Johnny Quick feature.

Alex Toth adapting Harper (1966). Interesting characters, a classic car, beautiful women, 60s psychedelica, LA noir and Paul Newman. It has one of my favourite opening scenes ever and Paul Newman is great in it. Toth would be perfect for it. Ross Macdonald's Archer books are brilliant too.

Lee lifted the techniques from Roy Crane's Wash Tubbs newspaper strip. It's funny that Ditko was well ahead of his time, well before comics in the 1980s eschewed some of the key tenets of comics language.
