"Sold" by Patricia McCormick is a fictional account of a young girl sold into sexual slavery. The novel has been a National Book Award finalist, but now, it's the most challenged book in America. "We need to prepare our young readers for the world as it is," McCormick says. #Velshi

Velshi Banned Book Club: ‘Sold’ by Patricia McCormick
“Sold” by Patricia McCormick tells the fictional story of Lakshmi, a 13-year-old girl sold into sexual slavery to help pay off her stepfather’s debts. Her story is told in a series of vignettes, deliberately fractured to mirror her life itself. “Sold” was a National Book Award finalist, but now it has a new distinction. It’s America’s most banned book.

@velshi.com’s interview with Patricia McCormick was SO GOOD. Author of Sold, the most frequently challenged book in the US, McCormick pointed out that those attacks harm at least 3 groups of kids: victims of abuse, those who support victims, and those who want to advocate for protections & change.

Velshi Banned Book Club: “Pride Puppy!” by Robin Stevenson
“Pride Puppy!” by Robin Stevenson is a rhyming alphabet book. With brightly colored illustrations, it tells the story of a puppy that gets lost during a Pride parade. “Pride Puppy!”, despite its cute premise and beautiful pictures, is at the center of a Supreme Court case happening right now. A small group of Maryland parents have sued over exposing their children to LGBTQ+ inclusive books like “Pride Puppy!” at their public school. As outlandish as it may seem to center a children’s book in such a high profile, so much is on the line for authors, for access to literature, and for families like the ones portrayed at Pride in this children’s book.
