Attempting to prep lectures & seminars at the same time as think about research is crazy at the best of times, but doing it while being restructured is WILD and not in a good way.

University departments that are doing away with research-led teaching and getting their academic staff to teach on broad, non-specialist modules instead are effectively deskilling their workforce.

Three golden rules of university management 1 Never look into anything you don’t have to 2 Never set up an enquiry unless you already know what its findings will be 3 Never let the facts get in the way of the outcome you’ve already decided upon

Universities across the UK are calling their redundancy programmes ‘voluntary’. In today’s Sunday Times a Senior Lecturer in Humanities completely exposes that lie.
“I didn’t want to leave, but anyone who stays in that job will be burnt out by November. It will be far worse for the students, because they are losing so many specialists in their fields, and it will leave no time for research.”

Universities' lack of aggression and fight defending themselves when they're clearly in the front line of a gathering zero-sum conflict is astounding. And pathetic. They won't throw even a single rhetorical or political punch. They are pitiful.

Four baselines for academic conference attendance: 1) keep to your allocated speaking time. 2) everyone is clever; stand out by being warm & kind. 3) be interested in everyone equally - from postgrad to Prof to conference administrator to catering & hotel staff. 4) in Q&A, ask an actual question.

If you're arriving at uni this autumn, or maybe dropping your kids, remember that there could be a ghostly phalanx of absent redundant staff, lost modules and degraded degrees making it a very unhappy place. It may *look* the same, but it won't *be* the same. www.ft.com/content/e5b0...

I am once again begging universities to realise that staff - academic, professional services, estates, all of them - are the product they are trying to sell. Without staff there is nothing to sell. No amount of flashy buildings will replace staff in universities. UKHE is in freefall.

Historic Oxford cinema under threat as Oriel College refuses to extend lease
The Ultimate Picture Palace opened in 1911 and is housed in a Grade II-listed building which is in need of renovation The survival of one of the UK’s oldest independent cinemas is under threat while its landlord, Oxford University’s Oriel College, refuses to extend its lease to allow vital renovations. The Ultimate Picture Palace in east Oxford opened in 1911, and has entertained generations of students and residents, including the Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes. It sells tickets for its 106 seats through an old-fashioned box office window to patrons queueing on the street, and its screen is behind a manually-opened curtain. Continue reading...

Exactly what I talk about in my @isrfoundation.bsky.social piece this week. Increasingly Arts and Humanities will be limited to so-called 'top' universities, with large cold spots across the country which mean that students from lower income backgrounds simply cannot access them. Do you want that? 🤷‍♂️

Is the government doing anything to prevent the hollowing out of university departments across the country? If 1000s of jobs were being lost in housing or manufacturing, ministers would at least be forced to answer difficult questions.
