Damn. Of all people, Kiel really understands what all the work was about. 🥹🥹🥹 Reading stuff like this makes me want to get bikeportland rolling again 🥰
BikeLoud without BikePortland
A letter from BikeLoud Vice Chair Kiel Johnson

It has been two and a half months since one of Portland's greatest bicycle advocates stepped away. If someone ever builds a museum about bicycling in Portland, Jonathan Maus deserves a statue.

BikeLoud began 12 years ago in the BikePortland comments section, and of course Jonathan was there to cover that very first meeting. For more than two decades, BikePortland has documented, amplified, and shaped the story of bicycling in Portland in a way that few, if any, transportation publications or advocacy organizations anywhere in the country have. I still remember sitting in my college dorm room 20 years ago, feeling both informed and inspired by what Jonathan was writing and photographing. He didn't just report on the movement; he empowered all of us to become better advocates.

The story Jonathan has been telling for the past 20 years is a remarkable one. It's the story of neighbors and strangers coming together around a simple idea: that bicycling makes Portland a better place. With this century-old technology, we have the opportunity to become better neighbors, build stronger communities, and create a city that is healthier, happier, and more equitable. Those streets, and that future, are ours if we choose to build them. Jonathan helped us see that we have the power to make that change.

I hope Jonathan finds a way to continue his work. But no matter what comes next, the movement he helped nurture will continue, because it belongs to all of us. We will keep showing up, keep organizing, and keep fighting for the vision of Portland that he helped so many of us believe was possible.

going through old photos.. Can you believe this was just normal evening bike traffic on N Williams Ave in 2016? And look how full the bike parking at New Seasons was! work from home really changed so much about our streets.

Someone just asked me if they should delete their BikePortland web shortcut. "Heck no!" I said. I am not shutting the site down or making it dormant. BikePortland will absolutely live on and publish again. What form that takes is what I'm working on. Stay tuned! 🙏

Did you know that in 2010, the City of Portland Office of Finance did an audit to find out which news local news sources did the most work to "stimulate citizen discussion about local gov't"? Guess which outlet came out on top? 😁

The TUF proposal says at least 75% of revenue generated (estimated $46M/yr) must be spent on maintenance. The remaining funds must be spent on Vision Zero-related stuff like bike/ped crossings, and so on.

What a thrill to interview author Evan P Schneider and filmmaker Mark Alan Hoffman. Mark’s film, “A Simple Machine” is an adaptation of Evan’s book. A bicycle plays a central role in the film, and it was shot entirely in Portland. Full interview up soon.

Occurred to me just now that Washington, Oregon and California currently have women DOT directors. Pretty sure this is the 1st time in history these 3 DOTs have been led by a woman at the same time. Maybe something will change? Happy International Women's Month!

Sort of buried in all of today's big IBR project news is that officials have confirmed the @oregonjournalism.bsky.social and @cityobservatory.bsky.social reporting about the massive new cost estimate. They now admit that the full project will likely cost $14.4 BILLION

It's so sad that we even still allow studded tires in Oregon -- or that we don't tax the hell out of them! Seriously. They are totally unnecessary and cost taxpayers many millions of dollars each year in road damage. Now... please get them off by April 1.

Hillsboro is one of 30 or so Oregon cities that already has a transportation utility fee. They offer a 30% discount for households that don't have a registered motor vehicle or a 30% discount for households where at least one person has an annual transit pass.

Just found out that ODOT plans to build an extension to the path network along the Sandy River. The new path will be 8-feet wide and stretch about 1100 feet from the existing path under I-84 to the Sandy River Delta/Thousand Acres area. I think alignment of new path is the blue line below...

"I am very moved by what I've heard in all the community feedback." - Councilor Olivia Clark Clark puts a proposal on the table: - a Transpo Utility Fee (TUF) at $12 per household/$9.50 for multifamily. - a Street Damage Restoration Fee at $10.30 per square foot Both together = $68M per year

This is an Oregon House Rep asking a DMV employee (and DMV union rep) abt the impacts of funding crisis. She tells a story abt what some customers do when she sees them at the service counter. Really shows the disconnect w some folks & effectiveness of Republican "no taxes ever" messaging. #orleg

Rep. Boshart Davis also wants to limit state transit funding only to transit agencies that can prove they have a farebox recovery ratio of 50% or more. Looks like a clear ploy to freeze out TriMet, since their current ratio is about 7%.
