Also, if you live in Tigard you should vote for Shawne for city council! He's amazing and would make a great city leader.

The name of our awards event and its top honor originated with Jacquie Phelan, a pioneering Hall of Fame mountain bike racer who used the alter ego and racing pseudonym "Alice B. Toeclips" throughout the 1980s. We adopted Phelan's famous moniker to honor her fierce, inclusive biking advocacy.

It’d have to be honor system. Although, if cities did it w their fleet they could use GPS tracking and have a complaint system. Imagine a volunteer doing this tho, w placard on their car and then they speed and get dragged on social media as hypocrites. Natural consequence!

Jonathan Maus @jonathanmaus.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Yeah same. I think if u add some marketing around it, folks would embrace the idea. Sign up online, get the placard/car stickers in the mail, and go for it. It’s like n’hood yard sign programs (which have been very successful in portland), but just on your car.

Jonathan Maus @jonathanmaus.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
My idea to help w speeding: A city-sponsored “neighborhood pace car” program where volunteers get a placard/signage on car saying, “I’m going the speed limit. Are you?” Or just do it w city fleet vehicles. We just need to normalize going slow and folks will chill.

Same. It enrages me that drivers have stolen the joy of riding from us. I want to start doing more rides with my 15 yr old son but I know of so many terrible tragedies that I just cannot condone him riding on roads with so many selfish, reckless, terrible drivers.

BikeLoud without BikePortland
A letter from BikeLoud Vice Chair Kiel Johnson

It has been two and a half months since one of Portland's greatest bicycle advocates stepped away. If someone ever builds a museum about bicycling in Portland, Jonathan Maus deserves a statue.

BikeLoud began 12 years ago in the BikePortland comments section, and of course Jonathan was there to cover that very first meeting. For more than two decades, BikePortland has documented, amplified, and shaped the story of bicycling in Portland in a way that few, if any, transportation publications or advocacy organizations anywhere in the country have. I still remember sitting in my college dorm room 20 years ago, feeling both informed and inspired by what Jonathan was writing and photographing. He didn't just report on the movement; he empowered all of us to become better advocates.

The story Jonathan has been telling for the past 20 years is a remarkable one. It's the story of neighbors and strangers coming together around a simple idea: that bicycling makes Portland a better place. With this century-old technology, we have the opportunity to become better neighbors, build stronger communities, and create a city that is healthier, happier, and more equitable. Those streets, and that future, are ours if we choose to build them. Jonathan helped us see that we have the power to make that change.

I hope Jonathan finds a way to continue his work. But no matter what comes next, the movement he helped nurture will continue, because it belongs to all of us. We will keep showing up, keep organizing, and keep fighting for the vision of Portland that he helped so many of us believe was possible.
