A stink bug flew into the flat I am renting for a few weeks. When I opened the window before trying to usher it out, a cat ran in. Now wondering what animal will be next.

A belated Spencer Library #newacq thread here: a Book of Hours, Use of Sarum, created in circa 1430 (Pryce MS D1). A wonderful addition to our MSS holdings, and a good companion to the Vosper Hours. Let's start with the Crucifixion and the opening line of text: 📜 #libsky #rarebooks #booksky

Thank you for the rare opportunity to cite A.D. Godley's 'Motor Bus':
What is this that roareth thus?
Can it be a Motor Bus?
Yes, the smell and hideous hum
Indicat Motorem Bum!
Implet in the Corn and High
Terror me Motoris Bi:
Bo Motori clamitabo
Ne Motore caedar a Bo--
Dative be or Ablative
So thou only let us live:
Whither shall thy victims flee?
Spare us, spare us, Motor Be!
Thus I sang; and still and still anigh
Came in hordes Motores Bi,
Et complebat omne forum
Copia Motorum Borum.
How shall wretches live like us
Cincti Bis Motoribus?
Domine, defende nos
Contra hos Motores Bos.

When I was a kid I read Ionescu's play Rhinoceros, where the inhabitants of a small French town turn one by one into a herd of wild, rampaging rhinoceroses. I was told the play was "absurdist", and read it as such. But living in the United States now, I see it's completely realistic.

Here's a riddle for you, or rather for the French horticulturalist Jean-Paul d’Ardène in his 1760 book Traité des tulipes. Translation and source in alt. He couldn't figure it out, and neither could anyone else for a century.
"It is a well-known fact that if you cut all the stamens of a red tulip before they release their dust, and that you powder the stigmas of this plant with the stamens of a white tulip, the seeds of the red tulip produce some plants with red flowers, others with white, and others again white and red."

One of the most important questions in the history of biology, posed during an 1837 discussion of agricultural breeding in Brnö by Abbé Cyrill Napp, the man who recruited Mendel: "What is inherited and how?" (Transliteration, translation, reference and source in Alt)
Hr. Prälat Cyrill Napp reaffumirt in ge-
drängter Kürze den Gang der bisherigen Debatte,
tritt der von Hrn. Direktor Liehr geäußerten An-

Google translate: Prelate Cyrill Napp briefly summarizes the course of the debate thus far and concurs with the view expressed by Director Liehr, pointing out that the discussion has strayed entirely from the actual subject—heritability; the issue at hand is not the theory of the breeding process, but rather the question: What is inherited, and how?

Recipe change alert. He’s referring to the origin of angels as being like the spontaneous appearance of “worms” in cheese. Those worms were Piophila casei fly larvae, which can jump from cheese to cheese (there was a Nature paper on the biophysics of this in the 80s). Drawing by Swammerdam 1670s.
