🧵 A reminder #OTD that 'Hardrada' makes no sense in any language. The Norwegian king who died at Stamford Bridge in #1066 was called Haraldr harðráði in Old Norse. Such bynames or nicknames can (and should) usually be translated. His means something like 'Hard Ruler' or 'Stern Ruler'.

THE END OF NATURE (1998) Acrylic on Gessoboard - 28” x 22” The first in what became a series of paintings about our relationship with nature. 1/2 #art
A woman in a plain dress with long billowing sleeves walks atop a high canopy of leaves. As she approaches the edge, she seems unaware of any danger. Her eyes are fixed indirectly off-panel. The warm glow of sunset washes over her and paints the sky in tranquil layers of peach and lavender. Absently the woman holds a ribbon strung between her hands. With the implied motion of her step, the ribbon brushes her thigh as a red glass heart dangles behind bobbing at the end of its loop. Sinuous trunks of thick textured wood support the flat-top of the canopy upon which she walks. Seeking perch, crows glide between the slithering tendrils that support her. The dichotomy of worlds is clear; the vantage above offers no perspective of below and what holds it all up.

Communities in the Long Middle Ages call for papers

Following the success of the Long Middle Ages Seminar Series, hosted at the University of Leeds, we invite proposals for 20 minute papers at the Leeds International Medieval Congress (5-8 July 2027). This will be a space to establish connectivity between scholars working on a variety of disciplines within the traditional boundaries of the late antique, medieval and early modern periods. Considering the Long Middle Ages prompts us to think critically about the continuities and commonalities between historical periods and across disciplines.

We welcome a range of research approaches including traditional methods and interdisciplinary methodologies and frameworks. Speakers are welcome to present their work in any format on historical, literary, archaeological, art historical, linguistic, or any other specialisations under the remit of the Long Middle Ages. Accepted speakers may also be asked to join a roundtable on the topic.

Please send abstracts of c. 250 words, paper title and a short bio to thelongmiddleages@gmail.com by 4th September 2026.

Now that everyone has returned from this year's @imc-leeds.bsky.social, I thought I'd share my CFP for next year's on female communities and networks again 😊 feel free to reach out with questions as well! #MedievalSky
In line with IMC’s thematic focus on communities, this series of sessions will explore female networks and communities in the Middle Ages from a variety of methodological, theoretical, and disciplinary angles. While many medieval sources focus expressly on men and male characters, relationships between women and female characters exist, even if they are sometimes hidden away at the margins. The goal of these sessions is to put female networks, communities, and relationships at the centre of our focus and thereby gain a more nuanced insight into the Middle Ages and our engagement with the time period and its various outputs.

In this context, both “network” and “community” are defined as broadly as possible, namely as relationships of any sort between medieval women, female characters in texts, and/or female audiences (both medieval and modern, both scholarly and popular). The aim of these sessions is to explore where and how such networks and communities can be located, how they are depicted, what effect they have upon their narratives or their historical surroundings, and how we connect to them now. The desire is for these sessions to be as broad and exploratory as possible, inviting scholars from a variety of disciplines.

Papers could address intersectional communities, religious networks, the performance of community, inclusion/exclusion, and much more in historical, literary, and/or material contexts. Doctoral Candidates, late-stage MA students, and Early Career Researchers are actively encouraged to send in proposals. I am planning an edited volume based on these sessions.

Please send an abstract (max. 300 words) and a short biography to juliane.witte@uni-tuebingen.de by the 31st of July 2026. Please do state whether you’d prefer to attend in person or online. Feel free to also reach out with any questions!

Let's revisit medieval Norway at #IMC2027! @marycoconnor.bsky.social and I are back with another call for papers, this time on 'Communities of the Realm: Shaping Thirteenth-Century Norway'. #medievalsky @imc-leeds.bsky.social
CfP:
Communities of the Realm: Shaping Thirteenth-
Century Norway
In the wake of civil wars which racked Norway throughout much of the twelfth century, the monarchs of the ‘long thirteenth century’ strove to reshape and define the communities of the Norwegian realm. Their efforts ranged from defining the ranks of the king’s retainers, to reforming the laws circumscribing Norway as a distinct legal community, to transforming its literary landscapes and creating new
cultural values aimed at elite communities. Communities beyond the courts were affected by these movements or actively reshaped themselves independently.
This session seeks to explore such questions as: how were communities in thirteenth-century Norway imagined? How
did they change or remain static across this period? How effective were royal efforts in achieving changes in the political and
cultural communities of their realms?
We invite papers which address any aspect of community taking place in Norway during the thirteenth century, but also in Iceland as
its political status changed over the course of the century.

- Political change and legal reform
- Norwegian imperialism
- Foreign diplomacy
- The hirð
- Communities of elites
- Military communities
- Rebellion against new political communities
- Cultural communities
- Religious communities
- Literary communities
- Linguistic communities
- Indigenous communities
- Marginalised and excluded communities

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words and a brief biography by Friday 18th September to Mary Catherine O’Connor (maryoconnor@balliol.ox.ac.uk) and Jonas Zeit-Altpeter (j.zeit-altpeter@student.uib.no).

For those already excited for #IMC2027, @marycoconnor.bsky.social and I are organizing sessions on 'The Literary Communities of Old Norse and Icelandic Romance'! 🌟If you would like to get involved, please submit a 250 word abstract and short bio by 18th September 🌟 #medievalsky
The Literary Communities of Old Norse and Icelandic Romance
Through the translation of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia regum Britannaie and the efforts of Hákon Hákonarson, king of Norway (r. 1217-1263), romance reached the Medieval North where it soon took hold of the Scandinavian imagination. Old Norse translations of Old French romances were copied and transmitted from Norway to Iceland. These romances soon inspired a wave of new literary creations, leading to the production of Icelandic chivalric romances and later ballads and rimur, alongside potentially influencing other literary genres. These narratives were amongst the most popular stories read and received amongst medieval and later Icelandic communities as the manuscript preservation attests. And yet they continue to be amongst the most understanded communities of texts within Old Norse literary studies. This session seeks to respond to this gap in scholarship and invite papers which investigate these texts, challenging former assumptions and opening up new avenues of scholarship on these texts.

Suggested themes and topics may include but are not limited to:

· Chivalric romances, fornaldarsögur
· Translation (Old Norse and Old Swedish)
· Literary communities
· Gender
· Emotions
· Genre
· Families/ genealogies
· Travel/ geography
· Marginalised identities
· Manuscript reception and transmission
· Society and hierarchy
· Ethnicity and religion
· Monsters
· Transgression
Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words and a brief biography by Friday 18th September to Mary Catherine O’Connor (mary.oconnor@balliol.ox.ac.uk) and Natalie Hopwood (ennrho@leeds.ac.uk)

Hi everyone! @imc-leeds.bsky.social 2025 was a wonderful experience for me -- so I'd love to do it again! Here is a Call for Papers from Mary O'Connor and me, entitled Envisioning The Times: Writing the Past and Shaping the Future in Thirteenth-Century Norway. #medievalsky #imc2026 #oldnorse
CfP for Leeds '26: Envisioning The Times: Writing the Past and Shaping the Future in Thirteenth-Century Norway
The thirteenth century witnessed immense changes in the political, legal, cultural, and literary life of Norway. The reign of Hákon Hákonarson brought an end to almost a century of civil wars while his son and successor Magnús Hákonarson lagabǿtir (‘the Lawmender’) undertook a major revision of the kingdom’s legislative systems. The reigns of both monarchs were characterised by political change, legislative
reform, growing international contacts, and cultural transformation. Alongside these changes, both kings were deeply invested in the
literary landscapes of their courts with each court becoming a hub of cultural and literary activity. Understanding how the past was
written and the ways in which texts could imaginatively shape the future offers insights into the politics, ideals, and cultural attitudes of
these two key monarchs.

In this session we invite papers which address any aspect of the political, legal, cultural, and literary life of the Norwegian court in the thirteenth century. We particularly welcome inter-disciplinary approaches which highlight the intersection of historical and literary trends shaping the political and milieu of the thirteenth century Norwegian court.
Topics/ themes may include but are not limited to:
Law codes and legal reform
Administrative reform
History of governance
Political expansion – including Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Faroes, Orkneys, and Scotland
Political contacts with Europe
Mirrors for Princes
Translations – Latin and other European vernaculars including French and
German
Kings sagas
Ecclesiastical history
Methodological approaches
