Been refreshing my short story collection ready to take a few copies to sell at Adventure X, and added a little bonus story - a short, previously unpublished Tale from the Nebula (like the ones in the novels). 📖 tinyurl.com/joningoldsto...

Just finished this by Grace Curtis and it was great; well-written and beautifully characterised without being hard work or worthy; charming without being saccharine and delightfully delicately plotted

still think word should have died out as a product when this happened
A little snapshot of Word's toolbar on a Mac. On the top row option bar, there's a red circle around the Insert option. In the toolbar, there's a second red circle around the Insert submenu. There are two Insert menus! Why did anyone think that was an elegant design? And where does anything live in either of them? And why does the toolbar hide icons sometimes, depending on the window size? Oh, no, you can't add borders today, sir, because you're looking at on too thin a section of your screen. And why does the toolbar hide labels, when the icons are so random? And why does it give so much space to options no one ever uses, like "make this box entirely orange"? I promise you, in 2003 Word was pretty good and did what it needed to do quickly, except bullet point lists and indents and tabstops, which are presumably relativistic effects

The next book from @inkle.co will be: Heaven's Vault - Book IV: The Rising Light Conclusing a story that began in 2014 as two words (Space Archaeology), grew through a 2019 game into a novel duology, and will finish as a quadrilogy of books. It is the tree, walking. 🖊️ forms.gle/QiVFkackkCNT...
A page of text posted from a WIP book. (Truncated to fit alt text.)

Some day there will be a tree, with its roots planted deep into the fundament, that will grow as tall as the sky.

Many trees will have come before it to allow it to grow so tall. Many lesser trees will have fallen and rotten to a pulp to feed its roots. Many creatures, perhaps all the creatures there are, will live and die and dream amongst its spreading branches. But one day, there will be such a tree — there must — and it will be as wide in canopy as it is in height, and when the strong wind blows the seeds will be carried further and beyond the horizon’s jealous imagination. Most of these seeds will fall on bare stone, or sink into the waters of the Old Sea where nothing can live and time itself does not pass. But should even one seed ever land on true soil it will take root, and should even one sapling grow, it will bud into leaf, and should even one seedpod bear fruit on this new tree then the old tree will live again, in this new place, leagues from where it began. And this new tree will know everything that was known by the old, in its bones, and it will be made from the sum of everything that came and went before and allowed that old tree to grow so tall.
Thus, in this fashion, it can be said that trees can walk: down from the mountain and into the valley, out of the forest and onto the shore, and even, given enough time, across the vast reaches of the Old Sea itself.

But the best bit is the list of “side stories” that you would play through between returning to the main time loop story. A season of 90s Classic Who right here:

The resulting game, which Steve Jackson named "Swindlestones", is super easy and really fun. We tested it with Steve and Joe, and he slaughtered us both at it. I regularly play with my kids

Superb. One edit particularly drops out to me as a bit of truly sparkling dialogue: the left is the first draft, the second the shooting script by Stoppard

Amazingly, the books I ordered far too late for Adventure X have been printed in time - so if you want a copy of the Heaven's Vault novels, we'll be selling them at our desk! Not all of these copies though, as I can't carry this many.

There is a philosophical theory that the big bang will be followed by a big crunch - a gathering up of the universe, under gravity, that will result in another big bang. Together, this big-bang-big-crunch -- or "big brunch", if you will -- must repeat endlessly, with variations occurring each time

bleak. $150/hr to feed a shredder. on the plus side, i really do think stochastic modelling will never produce a good story, ever, no matter how many good stories you throw at it, so if you need the money you should take it. But also -- make sure you put the word aubergine in every story. Teach that
