Courage is contagious. What we do to nature we do to ourselves. Correlation is not cognition. Cooperating for the general welfare is the purpose of government.

The UN AI panel's first Thematic Brief "sets a dangerous precedent at the science–policy interface," argue Jason Tucker, Virginia Dignum and Petter Ericson, by treating the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident as more of an alignment problem rather than an oversight failure.

A hand-painted traditional watercolor illustration depicting a dark horse standing on a steep, golden autumn hillside. The scene features trees with brilliant orange and green foliage framing a misty, blue-toned backdrop. The artwork blends elements of naive art and fairytale illustration, evoking a quiet, peaceful autumn atmosphere before winter arrives.

Agreed. But I think it's fair to note this cuts both ways. Trump's bs is also demoralizing *his* base. Going hard on impeachment talk does legitimately risk activating his base, so there is some trade off to calculate from electoral perspective. Me, I'm pro-impeachment, and I think most are.

At the moment I'm going to guess that Schumer and Jefferies are avoiding impeachment talk because they think that gives them an advantage in the elections (not sure I agree, but I think they think that).

The greatest Danger to a Republic is not that its Rulers should commit extraordinary Offenses, but that the People should grow so accustomed to them that they cease to appear extraordinary. What once would have shaken the Nation now scarcely interrupts its Breakfast.

Yeah and also it is an offense the logic of which is an existential threat to Congress itself (inasmuch as he's usurping its power to judge the qualifications of its members) (Which incidentally is also the power to judge the *elections* of its members)

Yes, I know all the arguments against. But at some point, Congress must do what it can do and make the Senate own whatever choice it will make. The House shouldn't let the GOP Senators off the hook by refusing to do the obviously correct thing.

Add this to his impeachable offenses. I don't say this to minimize it or dismiss it - it IS a major escalation in anti-constitutional behavior. It's worth pointing out that members of Congress who refuse to impeach are well-past legs to stand on.

To this I would add that it's also a direct attack on Minnesota and the Twin Cities specifically. I agree with the rest - it's just that they're also attacking her *as our representative* because they feel we're insufficiently dominated & insufficiently hateful of each other.

Additionally, it's an attempt to usurp the power to judge the qualifications of members of the House, which the Constitution vests solely in the House itself. And there's no reason to assume she will be the last member of Congress he goes after like this. It's a direct attack on the legislature.

It matters that she's a member of Congress. This is an extreme escalation. He is attacking a member of the one body with the constitutional power to hold him accountable and check his crimes. And he's doing so trying to gin up a fake basis to strip her of her eligibility to be in Congress.

Doing a pre-dawn house raid is obviously being done as thuggish intimidation and as a literally violent assault on her and her family. Overaggressive raids happen in other contexts but in this case it's going out of their way to do politically targeted state terrorism.

This seems like a good question and a needed thing, and not just in regard to Musk alone. After Iraq go t collapsed there was "de-Bathification"... Surely de-Muskification (of de-Magafication) could learn some lessons. In parallel, we will need some form of Truth & Reconciliation process, as well.

This is where democracy, experts, and government all have important roles. Collective decisions require collective response

These ass hats WANT to polarize - NEED to polarize - and use the "civility" as a weapon. They don't care at all about civility, but they will try to appeal to people who do care in the hope their opponents will unilaterally abide by some set of norms they have no intention of abiding by themselves.

When I say spiraling out of control this is a big part of it, but it's not all of it. Removing a carrier from the Pacific to engage Iran has effects in the Pacific, too. Losing operating bases in the middle east has effects the security of Europe, etc.

New open-access paper: Direct File showed that govt could build its own user-centered platform without relying on contractors. But the product was killed after a DOGE lead spoke with the private tax preparation industry lobbying against a private option. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
The ability of governments to build and sustain public interest capacity partly depends upon the position of private interests, and the ability and willingness of a government to resist private interest opposition.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) built a digital tax reporting service, Direct File, that created significant public value for users.
Direct File depended upon the creation of internal capacity: a government digital service team that could build digital platforms, rather than procuring a product from private vendors. Government control of the process allowed agile development and iterative improvement that would have been impossible under a traditional outsourcing model.
Long-standing opposition to Direct File by the private tax preparation industry, combined with Trump-era downsizing by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led to the elimination of the tool.
