Trump White House misspells “United” on the official “super intelligence” document with AI executives. Instead of “President of the United States,” it reads: “President of the Unites States.” Nothing says “super intelligence” quite like misspelling the name of the country.
Screenshot of a Truth Social post from Donald J. Trump’s verified @realDonaldTrump account displaying a signed document titled “Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities.” The document outlines voluntary AI safety and oversight commitments for companies developing frontier artificial intelligence models. On the right side are signatures and company labels for leaders including Sundar Pichai of Google, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Greg Brockman of OpenAI, Elon Musk of xAI, and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. Near the center-right, Donald J. Trump’s large signature appears above the printed title identifying him as president. The title contains a noticeable typo: instead of “President of the United States,” it reads, “President of the Unites States,” misspelling “United” as “Unites.”

the question "can computers drive?" is vastly superior to "can computers think?" because it disarms all the dorm room bullshit and reduces the question to its pragmatic implications, while also revealing that the underlying problem is one of vocabulary rather than anything metaphysical

Whenever someone smart says, ‘I asked ChatGPT and it said xyz,’ I’m reminded of Baldur Bjarnason’s excellent article ‘The LLMentalist Effect: how chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic’s con.’ softwarecrisis.dev/letters/llme... #quitgpt #TheAICon @baldurbjarnason.com
The intelligence illusion seems to be based on the same mechanism as that of a psychic’s con, often called cold reading. It looks like an accidental automation of the same basic tactic.

By using validation statements, such as sentences that use the Forer effect, the chatbot and the psychic both give the impression of being able to make extremely specific answers, but those answers are in fact statistically generic.

The psychic uses these statements to give the impression of being able to read minds and hear the secrets of the dead.

The chatbot gives the impression of an intelligence that is specifically engaging with you and your work, but that impression is nothing more than a statistical trick.

This idea was first planted in my head when I was going over some of the statements people have been making about the reasoning of these ‘AI’.

I first thought that these were just classic cases of tech bubble enthusiasm, but no, ‘AI’ has both taken a different crowd and the believers in the ‘AI’ bubble sound very different from those of prior bubbles.

Also worth reading: ‘Apocalyptic AI fantasies are a stupid, annoying distraction from its real problems’ www.thenewworld.co.uk/philip-ball-...
The problem cuts both ways. A poor discourse around Al leaves us vulnerable to hype too. When Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google DeepMind and also a Nobel laureate, forecasts that AI could eliminate all disease in a decade or so, actual drug developers are reduced to thousand-yard stares. But Keir Starmer's government seemed totally in thrall to hype about how AI will transform the economy. (Burnham's position on AI seems currently to be more nebulous.)Dangers from AI are real and present, and require urgent legislation. But not because of apocalyptic fantasies. What about fraud, child porn generation, violation of artistic copyright, deepfake subversion of democracy? As science policy expert Jack Stilgoe of University College London has pointed out, claims about existential threats may, whether intentionally or not, create a convenient smokescreen for the real dangers. Flashy alarmism might even become a kind of salesmanship: how powerful this technology must be if it can really wipe out all of civilization!
