I think this might be a « tell me how old you are without telling me how old you are » meme. We didn’t have a couch in front of the TV but everything else checks out

Even if you get a quiet model (which specs indicate, and which you should look for) they are loud. But also, literally lifesaving as far as I have seen the data. (Haven’t looked closely, but pretty plausible.)

The rolling units with a vent hose aren’t as effective as a proper window unit for a sash window. With French windows the rolling units are the only choice. We are among the only people I knew (past tense) with such units. I know more now. The biggest challenge is closing off around the open window

Harker is right (in the WSJ piece linked). This sort of event would not ordinarily be allowed by ethics officers in the Federal Reserve System—especially during the blackout. At a minimum, it’s bad judgement

Some people say we don’t build beautiful things anymore and, like, lol. Motherfuckers, we built this:
A graph from Our World In Data showing a precipitous drop in child mortality starting in the late 1800s going from an average of 48% to global rate of 27% in 1950 to the 2020 infant mortality rate of 4%, with some countries having a rate as low as 0.3%

Percent changes should be defined as the change in the natural log. Then $100 to $600 is a 179% increase and $600 to $100 is a 179% decrease. Symmetric!
