Well, that’s wrap! A huge thank you to everyone who took part in #5DebutAlbumsFinal Around 500 voted, fittingly making it one of the best supported polls for some time. The final top three were:- 1) The Stone Roses - S/T 2) Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures 3) The Velvet Underground & Nico - S/T..

Hi folks, for the last time (apart from the year end poll 😉) it’s time to vote, it’s the big one, #5DebutAlbumsFinal We’ve whittled the albums down to a final 100 (see list to follow), a veritable treat to the eardrums each and every one. Your task, pick your top 5 in order of preference, mine are..

Mention of Smyth’s mullet was another Pato one-liner that had me chuckling. 🙂

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

Nice choices. 3 on my list, and I’m also fond of the other 2, even though they didn’t make my short list. 👍

I think I saw the undertones at the kings hall? A converted swimming pool? And at rock city which may have been the positive touch tour - my memory is not as good as yours 😄

That’s the one 👍 I also saw them with Stockholm Monsters supporting but that may have been a year or 2 later.

I saw The Damned, The Undertones and The Police in Derby around 79/80-ish. I was at Rock City in ‘81 for New Order, so there’s one gig we’ve got in common, Ed. 🙂

👍 He sure was. Don’t have regrets, you’ve probably seen tons of bands that I’d loved to have seen. Appreciate the gigs you’ve been to. 🙂

They were both excellent, but I was humming Transmission to myself for days afterwards, so draw your own conclusion 🙂 Couldn’t keep my eyes of Ian Curtis.

Buzzcocks/JD at Derby, that was the one I was at. Bus from Nottingham. I bet we were at some of the same gigs back then.

John Carty @johncarty1.bsky.social · 30/08/2026

True. I saw 4 out of your 5 “school” gigs. the Clash’s drummer broke an arm, otherwise it would have been 5 out of 5 (I’d left school before seeing any of them, though). My school list would probably be from xtc, lene lovich, the dickies, siouxsie and the banshees, the cure, buzzcocks, joy division…

John Carty @johncarty1.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
