It's taken me a few weeks to click with this one - even by KV's usual drowsy standards it's pretty lackadaisical - but I'm on my 4th day of holiday, a bottle of cheapo red grog has been ceremoniously uncorked (er, unscrewed actually), & it's finally beginning to sound great... a slow burner obvs!

I found this old Pastels T-shirt in the back of the wardrobe a few days ago - mid '90s vintage apparently? I bought it at a gig but didn't wear it much at the time because it seemed huge and I felt like I was skulking around in a 1-berth tent. 30-ish years later I've "grown into it", shall we say?

Today's chazza booty, £2. Released a quarter of a century ago, I finally got 'round to hearing this today. The 4-piece Dr. Byrds line-up races through a 50-minute set of string-bending cosmic country, much rowdier than their records of the period, often flying by the seats of their trews. Dead good!

Beautiful Lynsey. She was my first crush, aged 5 or 6, when I was still too young to know what a crush was. I still love this single as much as "Virginia Plain", "Starman", or "Metal Guru" from the same year (1972). Don't mention the Coco Pop.

New to me - unreleased at the time for reasons unknown to everybody but LL Cool Ray. Perhaps its melodic echoes of "Waterloo Sunset" were responsible for his last-minute cold feet - or maybe he was just bored with singing about the UK class system? I don't traverse these dusty backroads too often nowadays, but I'm rarely disappointed when I do. Typical Bob: he assembles a large pop-style band, including backing vocalists & a horn section, then records the entire LP in a week in a rundown room with terrible acoustics. One of me faves, ducky.

I had no idea 'til now that Don was still performing this song live as late as 1980. This performance, by a completely different Magic Band to the one that originally recorded it (with Ry Cooder in its line-up) in 1967, sounds much more like The Fall's scrappy 21st century cover version. #FallFriday
