Utterly cruel, pointless and harmful. It does not minimise how bad Conservatives were to say Labour are now the most anti-asylum government in most people's living memory. This prevents people feeling any sense of safety and security after fleeing persecution. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

If Trump’s concern was drugs, he’d not have pardoned Honduras’s corrupt leader; if terrorism, he’d have gone after Iran; if world order, Russia; if preserving US power, China. If democracy, human rights or humanitarian motive, dozens of other worthy cases. What’s left is oil. And Epstein.

I have spent a lot of time in recent years studying up on Venezuela in a variety of areas, because it has one of the largest refugee exodi in the world, mainly. My professional standpoint on Trump launching attacks against it is that bombing a country is a piss poor way to stop people fleeing it.
A few days before Maduro's interview, Trump said the US carried out a strike on a "dock area" linked to alleged Venezuelan drug boats, adding there had been a "major explosion" where "they load the boats up with drugs".

It follows weeks of Trump's ramped up pressure on Maduro, who he accuses of "emptying his prisons and insane asylums" and "forcing" its inmates to migrate to the US -along with using oil money to fund drug-related crime.

After a period - over Christmas of all times - which has seen a giant increase in Russian attacks, explicitly aimed at civilian targets and energy infrastructure, and rolling power cuts, intended to freeze people to death, this is basically Putin gaslighting the world, through his orange spokesman.
Russia 'are going to be helping' with reconstruction of Ukraine, Trump says

A reporter asks if Russia will have any responsibility for helping with the reconstruction of Ukraine.

"They're going to be helping," Trump says of Russia. "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed."

Putin was very generous in his wish to see Ukraine's success, including "supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices", Trump says.

But Putin has not agreed to a ceasefire, because he doesn't want to stop fighting, and then have to start again, Trump says.

"I understand that position," the US president adds.

Banning refugees – people whose asylum claims have been processed by a hostile system and found to be legitimate – from bringing family members has one predictable and awful effect: instead of travelling alone, men will bring their wives and children on small boats, and some will drown.

And then this from the Independent’s Brexit Briefing:
One of the biggest post-Brexit prizes promised was a free trade deal with India to cut prices and boost economic growth.
After negotiations under multiple prime ministers, Sir Keir Starmer has struck the agreement - the biggest since the UK quit the EU.
He hailed a "landmark" deal that will add £4.8 billion to the economy, around one fifth of one per cent. A new customs union with the EU would boost the economy by 2.2 per cent, more than 20 times what Britain has gained from the long sought-after Indian agreement.
Campaign group Best for Britain said the deal is
"no substitute" for what we have lost through Brexit. In fact, it exposes once again how foolish a decision it was.
