Upcoming hybrid conference Nov. 17–18 on Deafness in the Premodern Mediterranean. Online registration fee is 60€ fyi Register: eu.jotform.com/form/2614425...
Deafness in the Premodern Mediterranean

Organisers: Davide Astori and Nicola Reggiani

Keynote Speakers: Ilaria Cariddi, Stephanos Efthymiadis, Christian Laes, Nazan Maksudyan, Mara Rescio, Fotis Vasileiou

Hybrid Event: 17-18 November 2026

This VivaMente Conference examines how deafness and the deaf person were defined, classified, and experienced across the premodern Mediterranean. Drawing on Greek, Latin, and Arabic sources, it reconstructs the conceptual vocabulary through which hearing, speech, and their loss were analysed, and situates deafness within broader accounts of perception, soul, and bodily function.  Particular attention is given to the relation between hearing and speech, to the place of sensory impairment in theories of the soul, and to the criteria by which loss, privation, and incapacity were distinguished.

Yayoi Kusama was a prolific artist who paved the way for gender equity in the arts. But she was not always known for her racial inclusion. In his 2023 article, Dexter Thomas writes that a publication tried to reinvent Kusama as a champion of racial equity despite her record of anti-Black statements.
