Artemisia Gentileschi addressed the issue of rape in her painting of Susanna and the Elders. A victim herself, at 17, she held rage for the rest of her life, just as the Jane Doe in the Cornell atrocity will. Imagine if the Chi Phi boys had destroyed a professor's car. Outrage!

Happy #FirstDayOfFall! Coincidentally, Alma Thomas was #BOTD, and she created paintings beautifully appropriate for this day: Autumn Breeze, Fall Begins, and Falling Leaves-Love Wind Orchestra.

Today is Abbess #HildegardVonBingen's feast day. Here she is, receiving a vision with a witness nearby to confirm, the chapel at her abbey, and the plate from Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party, commemorating Hildegard in stained glass.

It was the mid-70s; I was having breakfast at The Magic Pan (does anyone remember how trendy crêpes were then?) in Beverly Hills when a limo pulled up and Dolly Parton got out.

Mary Cassatt was particularly interested in depicting the tea party. The Tea shows Cassatt's Impressionistic style, while Afternoon Tea, one of her Japanese Ukiyo-e style woodblock prints, simplifies shapes and lines. #AfternoonTeaWeek

For #AfternoonTeaWeek, paintings by #Impressionist women artists. The movement focused on scenes of daily life, and women's art focused more narrowly on the spaces they were allowed to occupy, like the tea table. Here is #BertheMorisot's Tea.

#JudithLeyster (#BOTD in 1609) painted for a mere six years before marriage and maternal duties derailed her. During that time, she was admitted to the Saint Luke's [Artists] Guild of Haarlem AND had a precious tulip named after her. This S-P shows Leyster's pride in her work.
