11 out of 11 appointments done for today.

It causes confusion now. When asked what side of town I live on, I told someone I lived "by the highway"—meaning the interstate—and they interpreted to mean the state highway (the one with stoplights and goes in a different direction).

I should probably get back to work.

And yes, I liberally type compound words without a space.

Joey Stanley @joeystanley.com · 28/09/2026
Also, apparently I say "stoplights" instead of "traffic lights."

Joey Stanley @joeystanley.com · 28/09/2026
I probably would have rephrased it as something like "the eventual goal of a highway without stoplights." Look, I never said it's a useful idiolectal feature.

What is a very Missourian thing is to call frontage roads "outer roads." ("Take Highway K until you cross the highway, and then turn left to go westbound on the north outer road.") So if we've got one weird road thing, maybe we have another.

I'd have to check with other Missourians, but I suspect naming conventions in Missouri are the cause. I grew up taking Highway N (a two-lane road) to Highway K (a four-lane road) to get to Highway 40 (a state highway) or Highway 70 (an interstate).

In my idiolect, I use the term "highway" for anything from a major interstate to a two-lane country road that connects two cities. I don't naturally use the word "freeway" or "interstate." So this sentence took a sec for me to parse.
A screenshot from the news article. "The Utah Department of Transportation has spent more than a decade removing traffic lights along Bangerter Highway and replacing intersections with interchanges, with the eventual goal of turning the highway into a freeway."

The wavy edges are not part of the pattern and are there just because I just barely pulled out the pins from blocking. Those’ll (hopefully) smooth out.

It took six months(!) but I finally finished knitting this scarf! It’s my first time working with hand-dyed natural fiber yarn—a souvenir from #LSA2026 in New Orleans. The main part is #128 and the end is #239 from Hitomi Shida’s 250 Japanese Knitting Stitches. Looking forward to the winter!
A red knit scarf. It has an intricate pattern that mixes lace and cables. Part of the repeating design looks like a leaf.

Friendly reminder that the mean of ordinal data (and ordinal probability distributions) is literally undefined, let alone a bad idea, without imposing extra-ordinal structure. For much more, including how to build analyses under these conditions, see betanalpha.github.io/assets/chapt....

Also, there’s a really awesome detail at the end where musical motif throughout the series, which is the first four notes of a minor scale ascending, reverses. I think it happened when Juliet finally makes it back. Super cool.

My original personal website was largely written from scratch. I kinda miss the simplicity. The quarto stuff looks nice but with all its layers of tags, it makes it difficult to customize the CSS and layout.

In preparation for my quant methods class, I've apparently written ~35 pages of how-tos about tech config, "How do I...?" and "What is...?" They're all CC-BY-NC, and most pages have a typst pdf version.

In the Brazilian variety I learned, você was the T form and o/a senhor(a) was the V form. That irrealis one definitely wasn’t there but his explanation was super clear (albeit in layperson’s terms). If true, having a different pronoun for irrelais is pretty cool.

I chatted with someone from Mozambique today and this is my interpretation of his explanation of the 2S pronouns and conjugations in his variety of Portuguese: * você - realis V * tu - realis T * vós - irrealis

Besides, even if the fancy pages or the ones with famous passages weren't already all taken, it would have cost more. Not too many people are clambering over an obscure passage in Judges!

I bought a single leaf of a 1582 printing of the Geneva Bible. Did I pick a page with personal religious significance? Nah. I picked one that shows the origin of the #linguistics term “Shibboleth” and describes 42,000 people getting killed for “having an accent.”
A single leaf from the Geneva bible, showing Judges 12:6–13:21 It is in a two column format with several side notes in the margins. A closeup of Judges 12:6, which is highlighted. It uses some archaic spellings and is in an archaic typeface, including “long s” for lowercase “s.”

It says “Then said they unto him, Then say, Shibboleth. And he saide Sibboleth: for he could not so pronounce. And then they tooke him, and slew him at the passages of Jordane: and there were overthrowen at that time of the Ephraites, fourtie and two thousand.”

A side note on the word Shibboleth says “Which signified an eare of corne, or the fal of waters.”

I pull out the Hadley Wickham quote that you can't get good at something without going through a period of great suckiness. That something in this case might not be any one hobby but is instead the skill of learning how to have or learn hobbies.

FWIW, I play piano (mostly Debussy rn), play organ (started in 2020), knit (started in 2024), do big Rubik’s cubes (7x7x7 is a relaxing size), play Minecraft on my phone, and listen to audiobooks while running. I just started sewing (bc shirts never fit) and I’m about to join an a cappella group.

I recently moved and went from an Allen with 16 memory levels to a Rodgers with 99! Plus, in my old building we were fighting over the memory settings. In this building, that doesn’t seem to be a problem because they were all empty!

I think the field owes Jim Stanford and a monster debt of gratitude for tirelessly maintaining DARLA for over a decade. It's time to pass the baton and I'm happy to take it.

I wasn't planning on formally announcing VxH for a few more months, but with the early-than-expected shut-down of DARLA, I felt that I ought to at least tell people about it now. Sort of a "save-the-date" announcement. Except I don't quite have a date yet.

Joey Stanley @joeystanley.com · 27/07/2026
(If you work with non-English languages and are interested in testing VxH on your data, please reach out and let me know. I don't really have a good way to evaluate the output for languages I'm not familiar with.)

VxH has some benefits over DARLA: up-to-date software under-the-hood, batch processing, support for non-English languages, and many other small quality-of-life improvements.

From the LinkedIn of an academic I have a lot of respect for.
Last week, I emailed a (previously?) respectable journal in my field to let them know that a recent article I had been hoping to cite had hallucinated hashtag#AI references and that the author should be asked to update their article with credible citations to support their arguments.

Someone from the admin team responded to say, basically, that they weren't going to do anything about it.

I feel like this is how academic credibility dies. The main recourse I have in the face of AI slop is academic papers. If you can't trust journal articles to contain established evidence (even though the system has never been perfect) then I don't know how we can make policy recommendations, advise NGOs and charities, design credible experiments, etc., etc.

My only hope is that this is the trigger that begins to kill the profiteering publishing system and the 'quantity over quality' performance criteria under which we all are drowning - but I have a feeling that all of academia will need an overhaul to maintain any kind of credibility.
