In my idiolect, I use the term "highway" for anything from a major interstate to a two-lane country road that connects two cities. I don't naturally use the word "freeway" or "interstate." So this sentence took a sec for me to parse.
A screenshot from the news article. "The Utah Department of Transportation has spent more than a decade removing traffic lights along Bangerter Highway and replacing intersections with interchanges, with the eventual goal of turning the highway into a freeway."

It took six months(!) but I finally finished knitting this scarf! It’s my first time working with hand-dyed natural fiber yarn—a souvenir from #LSA2026 in New Orleans. The main part is #128 and the end is #239 from Hitomi Shida’s 250 Japanese Knitting Stitches. Looking forward to the winter!
A red knit scarf. It has an intricate pattern that mixes lace and cables. Part of the repeating design looks like a leaf.

I bought a single leaf of a 1582 printing of the Geneva Bible. Did I pick a page with personal religious significance? Nah. I picked one that shows the origin of the #linguistics term “Shibboleth” and describes 42,000 people getting killed for “having an accent.”
A single leaf from the Geneva bible, showing Judges 12:6–13:21 It is in a two column format with several side notes in the margins. A closeup of Judges 12:6, which is highlighted. It uses some archaic spellings and is in an archaic typeface, including “long s” for lowercase “s.”

It says “Then said they unto him, Then say, Shibboleth. And he saide Sibboleth: for he could not so pronounce. And then they tooke him, and slew him at the passages of Jordane: and there were overthrowen at that time of the Ephraites, fourtie and two thousand.”

A side note on the word Shibboleth says “Which signified an eare of corne, or the fal of waters.”

Just finished grading 63 ten-page papers. That's 200,000 words—about the length of Fellowship of the Ring or Moby Dick—that I had to carefully read and comment in a week. But, the semester is now done!

I've been wanting to make a video like this for a while. It shows that [ʔn̩] in /tən/ is all over the place in mainstream media. I'll use this in a presentation to nonlinguists tomorrow about my recent paper on how Utahns say "mountain" and similar words.

My latest knit scarf is turning out nicely. First fancy pants design for my first fancy pants yarn. 🧶
An knit scarf in progress, a little less than a foot long, with a rather complex cable and lace pattern.

Ten years ago I was doing sociolinguistic interviews for my dissertation. One interviewee was a local historian and gave me some souvenirs, including this pristine 1998 calendar showing local historical places. Since calendars repeat every 28 years, I'm excited to be able to finally use it!

Since moving to Utah, I’ve tried to pause and appreciate the mountains at least once a day. Days like today make that easy.
Photo from campus looking up at a nearby mountain. There is a large Y on the mountain. The foothills are in shade, the sun shines on the middle, and the mountaintop is shrouded in a cloud. A rainbow is visible on the cloud.

After talking about density plots today, I moved on to violin plots and, in a genuine no-pun-intended moment, I said "plot twist: it's just a density plot turned on its side." It was hilarious. And then someone made this for me.
A basic histogram and density plot next to a violin plot of the same data, with the words "PLOT TWIST" on top.

It was SUCH AN HONOR to speak in the Michigan State University Linguistics Colloquium Series and hang out with their awesome faculty and students! Beautiful weather and beautiful campus! I forgot to take a decent photo of so here's an awkward one of me with a scoop of the Spartan Swirl ice cream.
An awkward selfie of me holding an ice cream come in front of MSU's Dairy Store. Me in front of Wells Hall, home of MSU's Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures. If you look closely, I have ice cream on my nose.

Thankfully, the #BuckleyDrawFire appears smaller than it was last night, but it’s still a bit concerning to see a natural disaster so close to my office.

This is Penny Eckert's references section for her tribute to Bill Labov in Language in Society this month. It's not far off from the references sections in some of the stuff I write. 😆

Yes, this is true. Yes, pun intended. Yes, it’s whiter than I expected. And—for those of you aware of BYU’s dress and grooming standards—yes, I got a beard waiver because I’ve auditioned to be an extra in a small movie.

And Andor and Rogue One–style prequel to the Incredibles. Gazerbeam couldn’t have been the only one involved in getting that computer’s password. He was probably the (second-to-last) in a long line of supers dying to get one step closer.

Found this in my kid's room. Looks like she's gathering "evidence" to make a case for staying up later.
A hand drawn line graph with a general upward trajectory. As bedtime gets later, the number of "points" goes up. The "points" are explained in a legend below, but they're basically a proxy for bedtime.

Here are plots showing some highlights: number of turns a typical game has, how many shortcuts are taken, how many candy cards are taken, and how many tiles you move forward/ahead when you get candy cards.
A data visualization showing that the typical number of turns required to finish a solo game of Candyland is between 10 and 25 or so, with a long tail extending to over 100 turns.A data visualization showing that the typical number of shortcuts taken in a solo game of Candyland is zero, with about 25% of games seeing 1, and a sliver of games seeing 2. A data visualization showing that the typical number of candy cards drawn in a solo game of Candyland. 31% draw 1. 22% draw 2, and the numbers decrease from there until about 8. A data visualization showing that the number of tiles advanced in when a candy card is drawn. The distribution is centered at zero and ranges from -120 to 120, with some spikes on the positive side.

Almost four years ago, I picked up a leaf off the ground at Lowe’s and called it “Goff” when it started to push out roots and baby leaves. Not sure why, but it has always been super lopsided and grows slowly in haphazard ways. But this year it flowered for the first time and they are gorgeous.

I guess some snow geese stop at a reservoir in Delta, Utah during their migration. And I guess they all decide to leave and settle in a nearby field all at once. So we went down there and saw them do that and it was kinda cool.

Every time I teach about standard language ideology in my Sociolinguistics course, I make it a point to stand on the table and bellow, "YOU HAVE AN ACCENT," to everyone. If they remember nothing else from my course, I sure hope they remember this.

In my OPINION, you need to support your congregations singing and you can’t do that with no mixtures and no 2’s. Obviously it’s gonna be quote on quote loud for you from where you sit. It’s an organ. Have you ever heard a pipe organ in church buildings?😉Of course it’s supposed to be quote on quote loud.😁
