I feel like many creatives are lonely people facing the lonely task of creating, while wishing there were people who could help them to take on the work. The difference is that most successful creatives seem to know and accept that those other people will never come, and embrace the aloneness.

My only in on this (outside of believing in the humanity of all people) is that I will always remember the lives we lost during 9/11. I physically shudder whenever I see the twin towers in old movies. But I will also remember the lives lost when we used the 9/11 victims’ blood to write bad checks.

Worth noting: Beck has an authorized bio -- released Kenny Powers style as an audiobook without an actual ‘book book’ behind it. What’s most telling is Beck grapples with never being taken seriously as an artist, while glossing over the human details that might make people take him seriously.

This has all but killed documentaries for me as a fan of nonfiction storytelling. It’s odd to me, as Beck was an early admirer of The Devil and Daniel Johnston, a great albeit nuanced portrait of a complicated artist.

The world greeted Sea Change like it was a big elevation for Beck's craft as an artist. From day one, it always hit me like a funeral. Clearly, something inside of Beck had died. More people suddenly took Beck's music 'seriously,' but to me, it has always been less vibrant since then.

Maybe they also felt discomforted by the statement of horror, film, and art in general as something that can be intimate and personally meaningful - as opposed to detached 90s style irony. We’re kind of taught to believe that sincerity is ‘cringe.’ This was a film about the search for sincerity.
