Amidst all this, firefighters want to keep running toward blazes. It's incumbent on fire managers figuring out how to make sure they can. I hope you'll read the whole story from @daniellebochove.bsky.social, @joewertz.bsky.social, and me www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
Screenshot of text that reads: These stresses haven’t stopped firefighters from answering the call to deploy at a moment’s notice. Nell Duly was a volunteer firefighter and full-time high school history teacher in rural New South Wales when she got a call one Sunday last year asking if she’d be willing to travel to Alberta, Canada, to battle increasingly out-of-control fires.

Within a week, she was on what firefighters jokingly call “mopshot” duty. Working as part of a team of five Australian firefighters, she patrolled areas of forests already burned in search of any lingering embers. Doing so allowed highly specialized members of the Canadian firefighting force to deploy to the frontlines.Screenshot of text that reads: Duly now works full-time for the New South Wales RFS. While she said she’d deploy again “in a heartbeat,” she also acknowledged that the overlapping seasons are taking a toll on the global firefighting community. The changing climate, she said, “creates some concerning questions for the future of firefighting and for the future of mutual aid.”
