Can't help but notice "lots of people believe this very strongly, and have done so for a long time," is not actually an argument it isn't racist. "England for the English" also qualifies. As does belief in the return of the Caliphate.

Because Zionism is not as concrete a concept in meaning as apartheid, or genocide, or ethno-nationalism, or war crimes. Why not focus on those? Israel is a lot less comfortable debating their crimes rather than philosophical abstractions like something as varying in exact definition as “zionism”.

In any movement there are extremists and particularly one as emotive at this is bound to generate people who harbour genuine antisemitic beliefs. I’m keen for us to avoid having a party machinery which allows a very organised 0.4% to vote for very contentious badly drafted policy.

I’m ambivalent. Generous definitions of it are obviously not racist but in practice I find it hard to have much sympathy for anyone who is upset at the slogan itself. There is more to the motion than that, and the amendments voted down could have made it far less ambiguous.

Last thing I’ll add is that in a Democracy it’s *essential* that you have an electorate who will stand on principle to refuse to endorse/ defend/ vote for policies that they find repugnant. The rationality of putting up and voting for lesser evil does eventually land you with quite evil indeed.

And ultimately, it is a party’s job during elections to persuade voters to vote for them. The dems largely gave these people the middle finger. I’m not here to say those people made the optimal decision - but a.) the ball was not in their court. b.) if their votes matter, why didn’t dems want them?

Most people who voted for dems in 2020 still voted for dems in 2024. You’re talking about a minority who felt so strongly about Biden facilitating a genocide that they decided they couldn’t vote for it. That’s not an unreasonable or incoherent thing to expect from a large electorate.

Robert Kraft — who's given millions to pro-Israel orgs like AIPAC — once got a $1M award from Netanyahu for helping stop people from boycotting Israel. "Israel does not have a more loyal friend than Robert Kraft," Netanyahu said. Now, Kraft helps kick Macklemore off Ed Sheeran's tour:
Robert Kraft to Establish a Foundation to Combat Anti-Semitism, BDS, Delegitimization of Israel
Jun 20, 2019 at 03:25 PM
June 20, 2019, Jerusalem - Tonight, the Laureate of the 2019 Genesis Prize Robert Kraft was honored at a gala ceremony in Jerusalem. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Genesis Prize Foundation Chairman Stan Polovets bestowed the award on Kraft in front of an audience of 600 Israeli and international dignitaries.
The $1 million Genesis Prize, dubbed "the Jewish Nobel" by Time Magazine, honors extraordinary individuals for outstanding professional achievement, contribution to humanity, and commitment to Jewish values. Previous honorees include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; philanthropist and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; actor, producer and peace activist Michael Douglas; and "Fiddler to the world" maestro Itzhak Perlman.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said: "I am delighted to welcome Robert Kraft to the august family of Genesis Prize Laureates. This prestigious award honors Robert's generous lifelong philanthropy, his commitment to the Jewish people, and his love for Israel. It also recognizes his principled stand against anti-Semitism and efforts by our enemies to undermine the State of Israel through BDS and other similar campaigns. Israel does not have a more loyal friend than Robert Kraft."
Kraft previously announced he would forgo the $1 million monetary award so that the funds could be granted to initiatives combating anti-Semitism, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS), and other efforts to delegitimize Israel. This is in line with the tradition established by previous Genesis Prize Laureates, who have "re-gifted" their awards to philanthropic causes they support.

New: Macklemore says Robert Kraft — who owns Gillette Stadium, where Macklemore & Ed Sheeran were to perform later this month — called Sheeran. Kraft rallied other owners together behind an ultimatum for Sheeran: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you won't be allowed in our venues.

I'm not sure how to start this. So I'm going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour.
But before I get into it, I want to say something that should be obvious. In this moment I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.

The victims are the Palestinian people. The men, women and children who have been killed, starved, displaced and forced to live through unimaginable violence. More than 20,000 children have been killed in Gaza alone. People are being killed today, and people will be killed tomorrow. I want to make sure that as I tell this story, we don't lose sight of that.

Ed is my friend. I've known him for 13 years. We've shared late nights, studio sessions and stages. He has this infectious magic about him that I've grown to love. I consider him a brother. And because of that, we've had some difficult conversations this past week. The type of talks rooted in love and respect for one another that still end in a place of fundamental disagreement. Nothing I'm writing here is out of spite or because I want to tear down his character. But as I told Ed multiple times on the phone, our friendship can't change my responsibility to tell the truth about what happened.

Last Monday, in the middle of all the media attention surrounding Pink and what I said at MetLife, Ed told me that Robert Kraft called him. We were scheduled to play Gillette Stadium later this month, which is owned by the Kraft Group. Ed told me that Kraft said I would not be allowed to perform in his stadium. Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other
stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.

Ed was in …What I said at MetLife I have been saying on stages around the world for almost three years. So why is it an issue now? Because now I'm sharing a stage with one of the biggest artists in the world, in some of the biggest stadiums in America. At a certain level of exposure, "Free Palestine" becomes too much of a risk. If I kept doing the shows, saying Free Palestine, with Ed implicitly supporting it, the crowd getting loud and showing undeniable support for Palestinian liberation, what artist might speak out next? The stage becomes resistance. Maybe that's why this time it became so important to silence me.

And one of the most effective ways to enforce that silence has been to weaponize the accusation of antisemitism. Antisemitism is real. And that is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state. When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying "Free Palestine" gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn't protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.

I hope this isn't the end of my relationship with Ed.
Thirteen years of friendship doesn't disappear because of one painful disagreement. I hope we both continue listening, studying what is happening in Palestine and wrestling with what neutrality means in a moment like this. My door will always be open to continuing that conversation.

When my brother Omar was doing the subtitles for the video I posted from MetLife, I thanked him. He told me there's a phrase in Arabic:
لا شكر على واجب
"La shukra ala wajeb." There is no thanks for a duty.
That stayed with me. Because that's what this has become for me and millions of others around the world. A duty. Not something deserving of praise or gratitude. Not brave. Human.

Who is winning the internet, who is getting canceled, who gets to play the stadium and who doesn't, all of it becomes so small when held against what we are actually witnessing in Gaza and the West Bank. An entire people be…

A totally appalling slur on the name of a good, princpled man. I discussed the Holocaust with Ed Miliband earlier this year. He is not embarrassed by his identity and he knows what it means. The people saying this about him should feel ashamed of themselves, and ashamed of what they are defending in the West Bank.
"The trauma of the Holocaust does echo down the generations in a way, people say this and, you know, I feel it myself, he reflected. When he was climate secretary the first time, Miliband was once sent on an official visit to Russia in October 2009. As part of the trip he did a call-in segment on the Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy. An elderly woman called up. Her name was Sofia Davidovna Miliband. She identified herself as a long-lost relative, explaining that her grandfather was the brother of Ed's great-great-grandfather, both of whom were from the Jewish quarter of Warsaw. I found the story flabbergasting, and when we spoke about it, Ed clearly still did too. I wondered what all this history was like for him to carry.

Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
