Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your CV? Scientist: I made it in TeX and can't figure out how to remove the gap but I also don't want to get yelled at if I post a question on stackexchange, so I have instead decided to appreciate the gap, which is still there

My support for bluesky/atproto is pretty much explicitly a "political" project. It is bad for a small number of (mostly right-wing) people to literally own all the sources of media. Open-source algorithms + the ability to move your account without negative network effects opposes this.

My lukewarm take is that when people disagree about whether LLMs can do X (be it reasoning, creativity, etc), the substantive disagreement is really about what X means, rather than about LLMs themselves. Aka Wittgenstein was right

I wouldn't call the PRC model as being in its early stages. A model applying the same steps is applied across the geosciences for 25 years. Nature was very skeptical back then ... just to "re-invent" it recently acp.copernicus.org/articles/25/...

LOVE this question: "...why should...“non-credit-producing activities” [like lucid motivating explanations or mathematical education] follow a [highly prestigious award for mathematical contribution like the] Fields Medal, and not contribute to it?"
Quote from Bill Thurston describing "non-credit-producing activities" he values just as much as proving theorems:

I have put a lot of effort into non-credit-producing activities that I value just as I value proving theorems: mathematical politics, revision of my notes into a book with a high standard of communication, exploration of computing in mathematics, mathematical education, development of new forms for communication of mathematics through the Geometry Center (such as our first experiment, the “Not Knot” video), directing MSRI, etc.

And accompanying question from Grant Sanderson:

Again, why should these “non-credit-producing activities” follow a Fields Medal, and not contribute to it?

I'd vote for the future where there's the option of a box that pops up when lazy nonsense appears and says "this looks like AI slop. Would you like me to find a piece written by a thoughtful human on this topic - something that's valued by other humans and is actually worth reading?"

I wonder if this (i.e., scholar-created and maintained, openly governed, computational open science infrastructure) will open pathways to more nimble evolution of the fitness landscape, which could itself be a defense against ossified gaming of the system (as in h-index, journal prestige, etc.)

This is also why I think projects built on atproto shouldn't call themselves platforms. If we're serious about stopping the exploitative and hostile nature of digital platforms, it's about redefining the nature of a the producer-consumer relationship that has taken hold... we are building services.

Linking theory with design in this way is a major theme of the workshop: we hope builders will draw practical wisdom and inspiration from CSCW scholarship, and CSCW scholars will find fresh insights, empirical and design puzzles, and new research sites and partners, amongst builders.

I'm excited about this workshop as someone building, not just studying, infrastructure. CSCW insights into boundary objects, social dimensions of infrastructure, and the history of large technical systems have provided me with wise design principles for what/how (not) to build.
