I guess what I’m saying is, I’ve never had a problem enjoying the variety that all these iterations offer, and in fact I love the character all the more for them. I would say only liking one particular iteration and being inflexible to the existence of others seems bizarre and wilfully obtuse.

Hell, Batman only existed in the comics for 4 years before there was a serial version in cinemas. Only one year after he first appeared, Robin was his sidekick and his style and characterisation changed from the pulpier roots.

There hasn’t been a time in several decades where one only one “definitive” version of Batman has existed on its own… and people still act like there is one definitive version. But disregard the original because it’s not “canon” anymore. But… which canon? The (at least 3) comic canons running now?

When I first got into Batman as a very small child, Batman 89 was fairly new, and Batman the Animated series was on TV, while reruns of Batman 66 were on in the morning. All while the comics were doing the main run and elseworlds, and people accepted that The Dark Knight Returns was its own thing.

I love how this can exist, crossing over two versions of Batman that are running at once and very different, and last year we had these and Batman and Robin Year One all at once too. And people will still see a cartoon or movie that is equally as different as these three and say “that’s not Batman”

I think that behaviour was more common of punks in the 70s than it is now, especially the contrarian behaviour (like wearing swastikas to be edgy). I don’t think you know much about Britain. Also, I spent a lot of my 20s with American punks, who were incredibly liberal and left leaning politically.

That’s a made up statistic. I’ve been part of the punk scene for over 20 years, and raised by a mother from the 70s punk scene. It’s always pretty rare to come across the people you’re talking about. Being principled in anti-fascist views is broadly considered a key part of being punk.

My reaction to I saw the TV glow was visceral and emotional. But this was like a warm hug in the weirdest way. Such a beautiful, sexy and affirming movie, and so much fun. It’s another uniquely creative exploration of identity and living authentically. A perfect companion to I saw the tv glow.
