I feel like usually when a middleweight intellectual says the word pretentious they mean it the same way a tween means cringe. It just means that somebody tried to do something and wasn't ashamed.

I'm probably generalizing too much but I feel like I would see less watch out for motorcycle motorcycle bumper stickers if every person I saw riding a motorcycle wasn't constantly weaving in and out of traffic, dangerously and breaking laws.

That didn't work either so we're testing in prod. Why is it actually harder to have a website now than it was in the 90s? Shouldn't this have gotten much much easier? Why is backing up and migrating and testing changes not baked in?

My wordpress backups won't load into WP Studio, which makes me very nervous that they won't ever work.

I mean, I think it's basically a gimmick, but it's a gimmick my son is enjoying, so I'm torn. But if there's no way to reasonably do it without giving his info to meta or selling the house, it's probably not worth it.

Okay, #VR folks, my son is super into VR gaming lately and meta is forcing me to create a facebook account for him before he keeps using the meta. I'd love to tell them to fuck off. a: Is there a standalone VR gaming setup that isn't trash? b: is it even worth dong or is VR basically dead?

Certainly this is going to mess with my future video success, but I don't have very many subscribers anyway, so why not vent?

I really liked how he handled the kid. that was great. Hero shit. That all by itself was good.

I totally liked his mental health struggles. Again, as a hard boiled detective story, this thing worked. but it was a long way to walk over the corpse of the idea of Hal Jordan) to get there and to be honest, not for much payoff on the super hero side of the story.

Also, not for nothing, but the whole conceit of Green lantern is "guy that makes neat stuff out of green light" and they made like two things out of green light. What a fucking bummer. Ooh, a dollar bill and a bird. Mind blown. Sorry, and a watch one time. lame.

I'm intended to believe that some of the oldest and most powerful intelligences in the universe don't get how fear works? I'm supposed to understand that the guardians are THIS much of a bungling mess? I don't buy it. None of the setup paid off. it was discarded for a musical swell.
100
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
These writers basically thought "I guess our heroes have to be fearless" without seeming to understand what fear is or what it's for. And also without their heroes needing to be fearless. That's not what the ring is even looking for. it wants you to overcome your fear through force of will.

We get an ending where Jon forgives his abusive parents without them or even him having done anything at all. We get an ending where he and Hal are buddies despite Hal literally having tried to kill Jon and never dealing with it.
110
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
And people can say "that's the point" all they want, but it's only the point because a bunch of guys in a writer's room started with their conclusion (hey, wouldn't green lanterns make a great true detective knockoff?) and never once tried to actually earn their bones.
100
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Almost nothing that happened in that show felt like I was watching super heroes. In fact, if you have removed the green lantern element entirely, it would have been a better show. Neither of these guys ever felt like a hero. Hal's hologram was ten times better than he was.
100
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
If your hero is a broken dick who was abused his whole life, then yeah, Jon is fine. But when you need that guy to be a super hero, you've just fucked the whole thing.
210
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yes, in the context of a hard boiled detective story a cop on the outs and a private detective who are opposed by a relatively useless leucocratic police organization is fine. But when that organization is also the Guardians of OA, that's stupid.
110
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
But as a show about super heroes, it failed so utterly that I'm totally uninterested.
120
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think that first layer sort of worked. Like, the mystery was okay. Not great, but okay. And there were some neat hard boiled moments. And it fit the themes and all. It had tortured and deeply flawed heroes in an even more flawed world and yes, nobody but Jon could have delivered that end speech
110
Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
So here's the thing about Lanterns. it needed to work on two levels. 1: it needed to be a story about these two detectives who hate each other who solve this crime. that's the true Detective layer. 2: it needed to be about the green lanterns. About Hal and Jon and how they're heroes.

Joe Auerbach @joeauerbach.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Finished Lanterns. As I feared, it wasn't really going anywhere. I'll complain more about it tomorrow.

A friend of mine used to work with the plague and the black death and a bunch of other weird stuff and she's immune to both, which I think is amazing. But also those immunities were experimental and they really fucked up her vascular system and temperature regulation. Off topic deep lore.

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

remember when LiveJournal was bought by Russia and we all thought that was a major privacy concern? But now the literal president is owned by Russia and they basically seem like a paper tiger and nobody really cares much? Weird. I'd almost rather my social media be owned by a non-US country.

I have to be honest, this is not the way I planned on raising kids. When I grew up I had a huge family and community supporting everyone. Cousins babysat, grandparents took kids on trips. And that is not what I have for my kids. I grieve it regularly and also grieve the lack of support.

Using wordpress is so much fun!. If you want to figure out how to do something, all you do is look at a video made 12 years ago that suggests that you use a plug-in feature that used to be free and now costs a few $100 a month. Piece of cake

So, on a list of reasons never to use a meta product: When a kid turns 13, meta just decides for you that they get to start managing their own accounts. You don't have the option to opt out and the parental controls basically just become reporting tools. Fuck, off, parents. We own your kid now.
